Probably a stupid question about hard disk installs and WHDLOAD
Hi,
since I own an unexpanded A600 (total RAM is only 1 MB chip) and I would like to see a lot of games modified/cracked/decoded in order to run them from hard disk, I was wondering (but I don't know how WHDLOAD slaves work and if all the games supported are 100% decoded): would it be simple & possible to convert WHDLOAD slaves to hard disk installs (I mean, a set of .lha/.zip compressed files) ? If so, would it be possible for non-DOS games too somehow? It would be really nice to run all the games directly from hard disk, in my opinion. |

Short answer = no. WHDLoad simplifies and standardises all the operating system switching to enable files to be loaded.
Buy some extra RAM and enjoy WHDLoad properly! |

Possible: yes. Feasible: no. So basically what Codetapper said. For proper file loading RAM is needed to save the OS data, there's no way around it. And if you don't load files but cache the data and copy it to the right location even more RAM is needed because the complete disk image has to be stored in memory. It would be possible to have file loading with 1 MB machines but quit to DOS and all that would not be possible.
Long story short: buy some RAM and use the WHDLoad patches as Codetapper already said. |
