How do I install a folder on ubuntu as an amiga HDD?

Hiya ,

I owned an Amiga long ago and it was a great machine but a friend plugged the power pack from my atari 65XE into the amiga and vica versa when I was away for a bit and when I came back the Amiga was finished(Man that was YEARS ago hehe)

Anyway I started reading about infocom games and theres certain ones which have sound on the amiga, now I can get them working np , but after just a few saves it says I have no space left?

Heres the thing my only option is using a folder on an ubuntubox so I goto the HDD section in EUAE, and put my folder in but it has for no cyclinders etc NA which Im thinking maybe I need to do more? In essence what I would ideally want to do is some how use this folder in a way that when I save a game it will save to my virtual HDD that is the folder so I have more space.

Im curious as to where the first couple of saves are getting saved to as well?because maybe theres a way to expand this area?

Im sure this question must have been asked alot but I have spent a while on this googling all sorts and the options Ive seen entail using the amiga which I dont have.

First let's see your .uaerc file which should be located in your home directory.

It sounds to me like you are using the hardfile configuration option, or it's GUI equivalent, when you should be using the filesystem2 option.

If you were playing the games from floppy disk images (ADFs) then your saves are most likely located inside the image files.

As you can see from my config I tried to use /root/amigatst as a fake HDD but Im usnsure of how to do it so that my lurking horror rom saves to that HDD

ALso while Im here but this is only secondary priority but I need good settings for full screen and to get the F12 + S and other keys working so that I can toggle between full screen, the HDD problem is the main one.

Once I get this sorted I may at a later date look into setting up the amiga OS on a spare HDD if its possible with my current rom

Thanks

NB : This is getting some serious nastalga going the more I use all this stuff I am going to actually see if I can find my old amiga but Im sure I threw it out .(Kinda wish I hadnt as knowing more about PCs now than when I was a kid I would have probably been able to fix)

edit:

Im actually considering buying another amiga what would be the most compatible one to buy and is there a cheap place to buy them?

edit:

Just checked out ebay and was looking at amiga 1200, if I was buying one I would be just doing a buy it now but there a bit to pricey for an old old machine so if anyone knows any cheaper places , give me a shout. Im really annoyed with myself as well throwing out my own amiga , at least I think thats what I did, I owned an amiga 500+ and am kicking myself now since Ive been through my attic and cant find it.

edit:

Ok I bought an amiga 1200 lol , but still would like to get the setup working above however Im a bit worried because its been so long since I set an amiga up can one of you tell me if I have everything required to set up an amiga through a TV? Heres the order description:

Item Specifics - Vintage Computing & Gaming
System:
Commodore
Product Type:
Computers/ Systems

System Options:
Commodore Amiga
Condition:
Used

Commodore Amiga 1200 computer in working condition complete with boxed games, rf tv lead and mouse.

Auction also comes with dozens (see picture) of magazine disks chock-full of games, demos and utilities from CU Amiga, Amiga Format etc.

Finally I've bundled an external floppy drive and an excellent Goliath PSU with the Amiga (inc. cables) to ensure that plenty of power gets to the amiga no matter how many devices you plug in!

Bundled boxed games with manuals include :

Desert Strike
Batman The Caped Crusader
Batman The Movie
Sim City (Gold inlay)
Turrican

Good luck and Happy Bidding!

*************
(btw there was ALOT of disks in the picture but any advice on anything would be appreciated as I dont want to screw the thing up when setting it up, also what would I need to plug it into a monitor?

edit:

I think I have sorted my problem That means although I really wanted my bought amiga to be able to transfer adfs to that at least I can emulate the text games and have room for saves now. I actually just wanted a solution to a simple problem but never found it put in a plane way i.e hopw to save save games to an HDD

Ok so for anyone else wandering I took out all my filesystem lines in config and put in the following

filesystem2=rw,DH0:System:/root/amigtst,0

As far as Im aware DH0 = The drive
System = The volume name (This is important in saves and I couldnt remember how amiga paths were written)
/root/amigtst = some folder on your linux PC

and I THINK the 0 is the boot priority

Ok so lurking horror we type save but it was saying FULL so what I typed was System:mysavename and it seems to be working? Its a total guess on my part for how to specify amiga paths as I havent had an amiga for over 8 years or more I think(prob more) but it worked?

Ok I have had some help on this forum and now my amiga emulator display looks crisp as hell , no lines in fullscreen mode! If anyone knows any optimisations to this current file please feedback: (Hopefully this file will help someone)

Apologies for my lack of a reply but it seems you have worked it all out on your own, nice one

As you've rightly remembered, Amiga disks can be referred to by disk label (as you have used here i.e. System:mysavename) or by device (using DH0:savename would have the same effect). Did your previous save(s) restore correctly? Did you find the saves inside the floppy image?

Hey np at all , I dont mind digging into the software side of things its just been years, hell Im on an Amiga looking for a C drive haha

Yeah with lurking horror the saves seem to be working a ok, I also managed to save a game called elvira and Im going to try and load it later. I seem to have winuae configured for full screen now and thats my amiga+all stuff from amiga kit on its way so Im on a reading frenzy here checking out lots of the old games I used to love and seeing a heap I have never played which I plan to! For example elite 2 and so many others! I liked wings 2 , the only thing Im kinda half expecting to happen is when I get my amiga 1200 I may have to upgrade the memory as I think its just a stock default amiga 1200 with floppy drives , I will be happy as long as I can play some games though, then I will start upgrading within the month or so.

Here you know how in DOS you can press the UP arrow and it displays the last typed text , is there any way to do that in the amiga?

btw thats good to know I can refer to the volumes as DFx , I also noticed in winuae with me having a folder as a virual hard drive I can specify like 20 images in disk swapper to save me jumping in and out of the winuae window.

Cheers for the reply

Funny that you mention command history being a DOS feature because it actually relied on the DOSKEY TSR rather than it being an intrinsic feature of the command interpreter.

As long as your Amiga has Kickstart ROM 2.0 or newer then command history is always available, prior to that it was only available in shell windows i.e. shells started with the newshell command have history whereas the inital shell or those started via the newcli command do not have history.

Yeah sorry about that its indoctronation I think I tried what you suggested by using another shell and the history of commands works.

Thanks!
