the Sorcery ? Well Ron pieket explained it to me in details. He wrote a FM synthetizer which is running on paula, and that has 8 voices.

He did this to be able to pass and convert the arcade YM2151 8 voices music on the Amiga.

Well, that FM synth is definitely not used in the intro music linked in the original post.

Agreed, that's just 4 channel of regular samples... and not particularly inspiring ones at that... certainly no sorcery there

My NW rom from MAME v0.206 says that sound emulation is imperfect.

Anyway, this version is the best

Flaw is prolly this: "Subwoofer" sound filtering isn't perfect.
Which shouldn't make much of a difference really.
But anyway, here's my favourite version:

Even played it as part of a DJ set (rave/techno/electro) and everybody danced wildly to it. I doubt they had any idea where it's from, but - then again - everybody was pretty wasted by that point

From an interview with the composer himself:

Quote:
Taito provided us with the sheet music and some of the instrument samples. I recreated the wave data for missing instrument sounds with a simple FM synthesizer that I wrote for the Amiga
Quote:
The music driver uses dynamic voice allocation to give the illusion (perhaps not entirely successfully) of more than 4 channels.
So yeah, there's no FM synth running on the Paula, he just used his own FM routine to generate some samples.

Y'all need to stop talking about sorcery. Sorcery is lazy. Flick of a wand, some magic incantation, whatever. And then mountains are moved with little to no effort at all.

All this stuff are marvels of engineering with actual elbow grease behind it.

More or less what we do today using Deflemask or wav-recording from Hoot, but since there was no such software at the time he had to do all the work by itself; still impressive for me!

on the audio side; in the video side THIS is sorcery! (or a modified version of Nirvana Engine that scrolls)
Mean: smooth Scrolling AND multicolor in a speccy! Unthinkable until three years ago
(multicolor was unthinkable in practical modes until 2009, albeit some early incarnations did leak, like the multicolored text in Uridium menus)
