A590 XT - Verifying causes system to be stuck in loop

I have successfully emulated the SCSI side of the A590, and I thought that I would have a go at emulating the XT side.

So I created a 20MB hard drive (RDB-enabled), set the HD Controller to "Commodore A590/A2091", and set the next check box to "XT" (SASI CHS is automatically selected). The KS ROM I used is 1.3

Booted the A590 Setup disk and launched PrepHD. Selected Y to the question Are you sure you want to continue? Everything seems to be going alright, until I get these messages:

Formatting...
Verifying...
Verifying blocks [x] to [y] (~13 times)

Sense returned 0x91000036
Mapping out Block 54
Cylinder 0
Head 3
Sector 3
Replaced with Block 135
Continuing verify at Block 55

These messages run in an endless loop, except on the 2nd cycle the "Replaced with block 135" is replaced by "Block already mapped at block 0". The [x] and [y] contain the same numbers each cycle.

Resetting the Amiga after a failed attempt results in the message "Not a DOS disk in unit 0".

Is there specific geometry settings I need to use here?

This is not SCSI controller that just works automatically.

Drive/HDF _physical_ geometry must exactly match what you selected in partitioning program.

(EDIT: there was some thread how to configure it but I didn't find it)

I created a 21.5mb HDF and since A590 uses RDB I selected that as well.
I used the manual geometry as Toni suggested and came up with:
Surfaces: 4
Sectors: 17
Cylinders: 615
Block Size: 512
(of course)

This gave me a HD of 20.4mb

Use the HDToolbox program to define the HDF but first delete or rename the
current "Drive Definitions" file because for some reason even when you change
the definition of the drive it reverts back to the default drive that has [678]
Cylinders and causes the error you mentioned above.

Re-Define a "Drive Definitions" file. You'll have to manually enter the
Manufacturer and all that - just put in there what you want basically.

I did not use the PrepHD program, I just used the FormatHD program and it
formatted and installed. I think I'll try the PrepHD program just to see what
happens.

I used the Cloanto ROMs (rom and ADFs) to install the system. The A590
Setup disk doesn't work too well for installing the system disk - but if you
rename Startup-Sequence.f to Startup-Sequence; it runs well (That is if
you have the Cloanto ROMS).

Hope this helps!!

I suppose I am the kind of person who likes toying with the different types of hardware that Toni was able to emulate. It provides a challenge.
Your method works, many thanks!

So a MiniScribe 8425?

From my experience, I have created a 20.45MB hard drive and entered 4 Surfaces and 17 sectors. WinUAE assumed that I wanted to emulate a MS8425 HD and automatically filled the cylinders in.

Using these exact settings when I tried it, FormatHD reported "The hard disk cannot be found", even though it formatted the HD anyway (via Disk > Initialize). I had to manually install WB1.3 on it.
Nevertheless, using MS geometry works, many thanks!

As for PrepHD:

After editing drive definitions: I have the verifying messages but it wasn't stuck in an endless loop. Both the FormatHD and Initialize still failed,
Before editing drive definitions: Endless loop of messages appearing quite fast.

These are just my experiences.

Well, not on purpose. Like you said above; just messing around with
settings to get a usable HD.

My experiences too! Glad it worked out and may I say "Thank You"
because without you reporting this I would have never messed around
with the configuration. I've found a relatively FAST system for an A500
and can't wait to mess around with Hyperion ROMs with this configuration

HOIT!
