Re-producing Amiga cases?

I've been thinking today. Would it be costly to reproduce Amiga wedge cases through a plastics manufacturing firm if you gave them your old one as a cast?

Not sure how plastics casting works but I'd love to replicate my 500 case and do a clear cast for it

Not sure where the legality would be in reproducing an Amiga Case... arguably IF it was slightly different i am sure something could be fabbed!

Then I could put some hidden leds inside so it lights up at night

Perhaps the real answer is to make a fibreglass mold of the old case outer..... & then using the method of multi layer resin casting produce the colour you desire with a strength exceeding the original design .

Obviously the fixing of pillars to mount the mobo & other internal fixtures could be done from a inner template ..this way without breaking manufacturing copywrite laws this DIY approach could fill the design gap

Even to the point of a near indistructable carbon fibre BLACK case LOL

Obviously the creation of a resin CLEAR version IS possible BUT the thicknes would be incredibly heavy by comparison to the original

I looked into plastic moulding for custom cases when I worked for a workstation manufacturer, the initial making of the casts, setting up of the equipment and test moulding were quoted by various companies around the world and ranged from $5,000 - $50,000.
The production costs of each case after that was extremely small but had to be purchased in batches of at least 500 at aproximately $1.50 each when including shipping.

Of course for a one off, finding somewhere that does chaep vacuforming would be an obvious way to go, but the quality of a cheap vacuformed case would surely be dire.

Carbon fibre is the most expensive material you can use to make an Amiga case (except gold or platinum). It needs a special matrix (very close to those used in plastic injection), a high pressure injector (for the resin) and the carbon fibre itself.

The matrix will cost something like 20000 USD, and the usual batch is not less than 200 parts per batch. Interested, yet?

Vacuum forming is good only for "soft" angles, so no good for an exact copy of an original case.

The most promising method is glass fibre and resin. Good luck with the idea!

Hmm, how about laying down the carbon fiber sheet on top of the existing case and then applying the resin. :-)

Might be too difficult to get it into all the vent holes / other shapes.
