That looked correct. I'm surprised you get nothing though.. just turning the machine on usually givens me a single crap character...

Try the other amiga with workbench and one of the terminal programs listed above... get serial working in a known good configuration then move on. The serial port on the A500 is part of Paula so its not likely to be damaged.

Ok thank you very much but how do I format a floppy for an amiga and do I use HD or DD?

The PC cant format an Amiga floppy unfortunately. I use a HxC floppy emulator. However if you can format a DD disk (i use a usb floppy drive for my ST experiments involving banjos) you can then use crossdos with workbench.. but its a painful thing to do on a floppy setup.

I suspect there is either a cabling issue or dead paula.

Perhaps Chucky has some ideas.

I suspect Forest Penguin is using a straight serial cable and not a null modem.

Good call. I use a nullmodem cable between the dongle and the Amiga.. Definitely will not work without the crossover cable.

Something like...

That explains a lot, didn't know there was a difference between a regular serial cable and a null moden cable, thanks. I'll order the cable now and get back to you when there's progress. Thank you very mcuh

Yep, you used a gender changer there, those do not cross the rx and tx, they pass everything through straight. Basically it is very rare to need a gender changer in an rs232 environment at all. Straight rs232 cables are male - female and null modem cables are female - female, if everyone adheres to the spec. The A500 does adhere, as do the majority of usb -> rs232 adapters.

http://www.diagrom.com/index.php/download/

the daily now contains the update that should not only show a flashing green screen at chipmemerrors but also show what bit is faulty by showing stripes on the screen

Any chance of a A1000 kickstart disk?

well. no idea how to prep one. and I guess it would require too much of a working machine anyway.

That is true but it could help with less terminal diagnosis.

I believe EmuTOS generates a kickstart disk from a TOS ROM for an amiga..

You can do it without a working machine in winuae, or adapt the code to make an adf

http://aminet.net/package/util/misc/WriteKickDisk

Iirc the kick disk bootblock has KICK in the beginning and the actual ROM starts from the next available sector after the boot block and continues sequentially. You can pad the rest of the adf with zeroes

Should I try swapping the two chips that are identical, one of which controls the serial port?
