Bionic Commando powerups

In Bionic Commando, powerups drop from the sky. It's not clear how to use them or what they do. One of the powerups is a parachute. Not sure what it does.

All power-ups fall down via parachute. There are a rapid fire gun, grenade laucher, plasma bolt blaster and a bionic arm turbo charger for extra speed (just checked the manual).
