Official level/map editors
I am sure many of you heard and know that in most games the levels you play were built using some internal level and map editors. "Reverse engineering" made by people like CFOU! or JOTD and information which can be obtained after completion of the game (eg. Battle Isle, History Line) or from the interview with the authors (Traps'n'Treasures) are an evidence of that. Does anyone have such level or map editors? I know that there are some unofficial tools which help you to create extra levels and maps (eg. Battle Isle map editor, History Line map editor, Benefactor map editor) to many games but maybe someone has an access to original ones.
The only offical one which I know is the map editor for Hired Guns. Scott Johnston released him some years ago. |

Or even unofficial ones...the FirePower Map Editor springs to mind...but there must be others?

There are mostly unofficial. Most of the original material (source code, development tools) have been lost even by companies who own the rights (example: Cinemaware).
Besides, a lot of games where a level editor has been used also need specific code to make the levels work (Lemmings, Gods ...) You could edit some levels but it would be limited. Of course that's not the case when the official editor has been made public on game release. |

i've always wondered about Lemmings 1 level editing. the L2 editor is excellent, but it would be really good to be able to make new 2 player levels for the original.
would it be a tricky task working it out then jotd? the files did look like gibberish when i looked into it before i must admit. the best unofficial ones i can think of are Lemmings 2 and Cannon Fodder. |

I guess they had an editor (for pictures, initial position of lemmings, exit...) but they had to code something for most of levels too. At the time, most games were not designed to be expandable. The programmers had enough tough time meeting the release deadlines Other example: Gods contains self-modifying code. When you disable a trap (using a lever), it inserts a NOP or a RTS somewhere to disable the trap. If you want new levels for lemmings, I suggest that you get hold of the excellent lemmings remake for Windows (really awesome work): http://www.retroremakes.com/forum2/s...iew.php?gm=279 and then bug the author for new levels & level editor. I think nowadays the future of game expansion lies in game remakes. I mean not game resourced to be ported to other plaforms (GBA unofficial Another World, Car Vup versions, Reminiscence aka Flashback remake from original data files), but games rewritten not using the original code at all, and with the help of a powerful editor to first recreate the original levels, and then to create new ones. |

I think that the "official editors released after the game" list is very small. You could try to make a list containing all official/unofficial editors, released after the game, or with it. Ok, let me start: - Hired Guns (official) - Lemmings 2 - SWOS - Firepower - Cannon Fodder - Lotus III (official) - Benefactor There are certainly a lot more. |

I can add History Line (works bloody damn slow on Classic Amiga, uses MUI) and Battle Isle.

Speaking of which, I recall that there is also Lotus 3 constructor (although very pseudo-constructor) and 4D Sports Driving built-in Track Editor.

i´m not sure if many people would use it....
most people like to have complete new game than just building their own ones... perhaps we should start a poll about the neccessary of that editor... |
