It would be nice to see some bigger games for A1200 with fastmem and harddrive. Back in the day it was pretty much only the Doom clones that asked for those specs.

As a coding challenge I guess 1MB OCS is the most appealling, but to give the devs a little more headroom to chase/realize a more advanced idea I'd say, accelerated A1200 with 030 (or fast 020) and 4MB Fastmem.
My first expansion for the 1200 back in 1994 was a 28MHz 020 with 4MB fastMem and it felt like a new computer compared to stock A1200. And it was quite affordable back then already. |

In some ways, a high-end 68030 + AGA hits the sweet spot in terms of CPU vs. chipset performance. With faster CPUs, the chipram becomes more of a bottleneck, but a 68060 is still needed for 3D games, like Doom-type games, if a good frame rate is the goal with 1x1 pixels. However, not many have 68060 equipped Amigas, so maybe not a good idea to require a 68060.
The games were perhaps at their best in 1994-96, before the 3D cards became common on PCs. But the Amiga didn't ever get some of the best titles from PC, like C&C, Red Alert, Master of Orion 2, Star Control 2, and Civilization 2. UFO: Enemy Unknown was an exception, but it was still a bit slow on an A1200, as Microprose never learned to program Amigas well. It would still be challenging to code for 68030 +AGA, as you'd need to get everything out of them, to get impressive results. And this would be more interesting, as these higher-end Amigas didn't get many good titles back in the days, while the A500/1 MB machines have been pushed many times to their limits. And these days, coding for 68000/OCS seems uninteresting to me, it's like being stuck in the 70's/early 80's, when we could use the technology of the early 90's without losing the retro spirit. |

So in late November there was less than 60 votes, it's now 80. Just thought I would remind folks in case they have missed this one. Maybe Umpal will pop up the next poll after a few further votes; that second poll sounds more interesting.

definitively BOTH
I would like to see more games, that run well on low specs but can take advantage of more ram and a faster CPU if available. Last edited by Gorf; 11 February 2019 at 23:40. |
