Zarathrusta

I recently bought the game "Zarathrusta", mostly because of the name.

The disk turned out to be faulty, so I couldn't actually install it. But then I found a ready-installed copy of its WHDLoad version on the Internet, and thought I was allowed to download it, because I had already paid for the original version.
Now I can play it, but there's one thing that puzzles me: I can't override the default controls. I would want to play it with a joystick (well, an emulated one at the moment), but the game won't let me. It allows me to redefine the controls, and even displays the new values of the controls, but it will still use the old default controls. Has anyone else had the same problem?

It is possible to play with a joystick, but can't remember now how to set it so.
