Xpedition

I was rummaging through my Amiga CD collection (mostly covers from Polish mags) and stumbled upon a demo of this game. AFAIK it was never released as a finished product. Ten years ago when seeing it for the first time I thought it was pretty good. And last night I almost spent two hours playing it and still didn't managed to finish it (arghh... the last baddie is really thought). I'm curious of what you guys think of it. It's in the Zone. Works fine with ClassiWB and WinUAE.

Since there're no instruction here's a short list of the keys:

A/Z pick up/drop items
R radar

there are more but I'm not sure what they do exactly. You basically have to kill all the baddies and collect a disk(nr 8) to open a door to get access to even more enemies for you to slaughter. Simple... or is it?

Yes I can remember that demo. It`s very nice and I played it very often.
AFAIK there was an update on developer page some years ago that tells us that the projects is still alive.
It`s a shame that this game was never completed.

Their old web site is no longer online http://republika.pl/gobisoft/index.htm you can still access some parts of it via web.archive.org but not the lha files with the games (and the source codes!). You can download Legion (another geat game) from ppa.pl though, but not Xpedition.
Too bad. Maybe someone would pick it up where the authors gave up.

Questions, questions, questions...

From what I can see, there's only ever been a "demo" released of this game and it's available on Aminet here.

...but, from petsasjim1's YouTube video, a different set of files are shown i.e. "level_editor.exe" and "marines.exe" etc:

[ Show youtube player ]

Also, why does HOL:

a) not mention that this is "unreleased"?
b) not have this listed as [AGA], given that it was tested on this only, and there's also the following screen?

You guys know that I like to tinker

...so, by using old school compression, I've managed to get everything to fit on a .ADF (FFS)

I also added some important text which is shown before the game starts (thanks ppill):

Attached for anyone that want it
Attached Files
File Type: zip Xpedition (demo-playable) (1997)(Gobi)[unreleased].zip (676.2 KB, 308 views)

I think these keys were selected because of A=akcja (action), Z=zostaw

I found this game just a few weeks ago and added it to my long list of games to play. It seems I have the same version as petsasjim, which seems to be the full version. Don't remember where I got it from though

There is a problem though. Some files using special Polish characters, so game does not load all files (check with SnoopDOS). Game still works, but you will have gfx glitches (like the ones you see in petsasjim's video). Guess this could easily be fixed with some help of talented EAB members. Temporary set Workbench to Polish language may work too.

The version I have is ~10 Mb extracted, so it will not fit on a disk

edit: full version on EasyJohn's FTP (also uploaded to The Zone).

Yes, the disk I made is just of the "demo" found on Aminet.

HOL only seems to have the "demo" screenshots also...

No "demo" text on title screen in this version. So must be the full version.

See my edit in previous post

Given what you've written; I've renamed the "demo" disk in post #6

At least people without hard drives can now play this version; so my efforts aren't completely wasted

...plus, it can also be added to the next TOSEC updates.

Regarding the "demo" version, there are also Polish characters:

It seems to run fine but I haven't played extensively.

...so the billion dollar question may be; with the full version, did you extract all contents on a "real" Amiga or inside emulation?

Yup, exactly what I said above is the solution

...extracted the .LHA inside emulation, loaded the same "alien" level as petsasjim does in his video. The results speak for themself:

Come on hipoonios; you should know by now only to extract archives on a "real" Amiga or inside emulation and not via Windows

Also, not sure about this being the "full" game; yes it has way more content than the demo but...

...it's all over the place and not linear what-so-ever i.e:

a) no title screen (from a quick look).
b) on the main screen you need to select men, weapons, map to play (via a "file requester" window) etc.
c) then you can click Start.

I'm not going to rename the "demo" .ADF that I made in post #6 again.

...but, given the small amount of investigation I've now undertaken tonight; IMHO this game is definitely [unreleased] so HOL should be updated accordingly; unless anyone can prove otherwise

Of course I can:

a) rename the disk I created back to "Xpedition (demo-playable) (1997)(Gobi)[unreleased].adf" again.
b) delete from post #6.
c) re-upload to post #6 again.

...just can't be bothered.

I've renamed the file in my WinUAE collection though
