That might not solve the problem(s) yet.

At least it seems that the FinalWriter 5.03 version available in TOSEC is an ugly rip.
I retested FW due to this Apps problems thread and I couldn't get the save function to work.
Moreover, there's no documentation at all.
(assuming the original version had a printed manual only?)

So, could anyone upload a complete/different/newer version, please?

Roll eyes (sarcastic) FAILURE!

Thanks for uploading, but this version doesn't work at all.

FinalWriter executable starts, and then gets back to CLI.
Might be we DO need the fonts, too!

So if you still have the install disks (or anyone else) please upload them. Even though I tried to copy the Fonts directory from the TOSEC install directory to the directory where I extracted your ZIP to, I couldn't make the application work.

Thanks for this, but this didn't work either.

Do you see? This application must be properly installed from install disks!
It's like a Windows word processor ('Word' or 'WordPerfect') which CANNOT work if it's just copied off one disk and directly to another.

So do you still have these install disks?

[edit] Why are all these icons BROKEN? (only showing tiny squares)
This looks like a corrupt installation to me. Please test if all of this stuff still works for you at all. I doubt it.

No, I just copied it from a harddrive I bought second-hand...

No I don't have the install disks

The icons are not broken, they are probably newicons, if you havn't got it running a default is shown so you at least have something to click on...

What you could try is install version 5, then extract 97 into the same drawer...

try running snoopdos or similar to see what it's failing on...

Hmmm, I doubt it's an assign or an 'Insert Volume xxxxx' would pop up, as for a missing library, I've hex read the exe and it only uses standard libraries and the ones in FWLibs.

Paths to storage areas are set via tooltypes but all are disabled in the archive.

The most likely cause of the problem is the prefs file, it's probably failing when it tries to open whatever screen it's set for and where to look for fonts etc.

Delete 'FWFiles/FW.prefs' and it should work

Me too

I know WW is supposed to be better, but as I prefer FW5 I'm hoping FW97 will be 'even better'.

In the Zone! I've never had a need to install this, so I hope it works.....

BTW there's also an 030 patch for FW 97 (English/German) available on Aminet too:
