AmiKit vs ClassicWB vs AmigaSys vs...

I've seen all these distros - AmiKit, ClassicWB, AmigaSys - but I don't really know how to choose between them, and don't really have time to do in-depth testing of each.

Would be interested to hear people's thoughts on their relative strengths / weaknesses (I'm sure lots of different people have different opinions!)

I'm using WinUAE which I got as part of Cloanto's Amiga Forever 2008 - do any of these distros have a big advantage over the 'built-in' AF setup?

Amikit is a very polished all-in-one distro made for high-end Amiga (ie: WinUAE), so it's NOT very lightweight.

AmigaSYS is similar to Amikit, but NOT very polished, IMO !

AmiKit is made for WinUAE, not real Amiga's.

AmigaSYS has many different builds, one for WINUAE, others for real Amiga's.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

So is that the general consensus on EAB: ClassicWB unnecessary for WinUAE; avoid AmigaSys; stick with AmiKit?

Amikit/AmigaSys = fast emulated Amiga = Not usefull (too fast, causes glitches) for old Amiga games, but good for all other Amiga related stuff.

ClassicWB = much more compatible, use it in WinUAE for old games.

actually i like Amikit a lot (but i'm bias as i was a beta tester lol) but seriously, i really do like it, it's like an all in one and almost like the amiga i wished for (all the PC grunt and flexability and it still seems to have a good amiga feeling to it) just my 2 cents worth

In my opinion Classic WB is best on a real Amiga - I use the full version on my A1200 - it is excellent...

AmigaSYS rules!
ClassicWB IIRC is based on OS3.1 or something which makes it not much good.
And it is common knowledge that AmiKit is utter crap, eg. doesn't even install reliably.

I installed AmiKit recently and I was very impressed with how well it was all set up. There were some nice features that I hadn't thought to add to my own Workbench, and it was all much prettier in 24bit colour instead of 16 colours. But after a day of trying it out, I decided to change the pointer preferences, and it crashed when I saved it, and hasn't been able to start up ever since, so I think I'll have to reinstall it again.

for the "real" amiga classicwb is all that I have ever used, since I found out about it a few years back. Its absolutely great for all my filemoving needs, most everything that is needed to extract and run the different files I move is in there, requirements are low and it has patched a lot of anoying bugs and restrictions from the "real" amiga os. I use it both on my a1200 and winuae, its easy to use and I have quick shortcut access to whatever I need to do. well for me thats all I really need from an os, so "classicwb" all the way for me

For me classicwb is good for not much expanded machines, while amigasys is for faster ones. and amikit is really utter emucrap
