Question Floppy drive sound

Wasn't sure where to put this post..

It's not a problem, but a feature sugguestion for UAE that I would love to see implemented... (It's been touched on before here, but I thought I might as well ask again... It's been over a year...)

I would like the ability to hear the diskdrive noises as UAE is accessing the floppydisk (much like the ST emulator SainT does)

As I recall, there was at least one demo on the amiga, that made the actual drive play music (if you left it too long it would totally knacker your drive too if I renember correctly... )

Of course, there should also be an option to turn this off (so it doesn't get too annoying).

Not really an essential feature, but it would make me happy

I also concur, not an essential feature, but would be a nice one.

Stupid ass question: is there an audio recording (any format) of this available anywhere?

I agree, that'd be fun and I have to say, I miss it ;(. Years back I listened to the sound of the drive to know when the game finishes loading.
Add this feature, please .

EDIT: BTW you could create a poll on this...

Floppy drive sound is an ESSENTIAL tool to recognize when the floppy is working well, or what is happening

How the hell do you make it grind, grate and make those long ass noises as the drives is slowly reading?

What about the click-click-click noises as it reads?

The drives were mechanical and the type of protection and disk format dictated the sound?!?! how does winuae emulate this accurate?

(I would love to see it but only if it sounds proper and authentic!)

Wow, sounds like this is getting to be a wanted feature for a few people

I may have a tinker with the sources myself, and try to get this in.. (I am a newb when it comes to stuff like this tho, so I probably won't get very far :eek - I have finally got WinUAE to compile and produce a runnable EXE tho )

I was thinking of sticking a quick and nasty hack into \src\disk.c:update_drive_gui function... to get it to click when the number changes, and maybe even make the wiirrring noise if the drive motor led is on...

(I can imagine the posts coming after this one... "you're going to do WHAT!?", etc )

How about a feature that makes the pretty much redundant PC floppy grind about a bit when accessing an ADF

It makes the pc drive move about like the Amiga adf hence attempting to create the REAL DEAL.

If it knackers the drive and disk (It'll need one to work!!) so what, drives can be picked up for about £3.00 new, and floppies, about £7 for a few hundred off ebay!!

It is possible. You would have to "move" a virtual floppy stepper motor as the disk accesses happen and simulate the sound it would make. Not an easy job however, and UAE was probably never designed for this, so to change the code to do it could mean a huge amount of effort.

Would be nice though!

Bad idea...

Whenever a PC accesses teh disk drive, the whole system comes to a halt. That's how nice PCs are :P

I think the sound could be simulated easily using the PC speaker with simple pulse generation... I really am not sure about how easy would this be, though.

Better solution: Ditch 95/98/ME. Upgrade to NT/2K/XP.

I'm too lazy, many times have I pondered implementing the drive sounds into WinUAE.

In the good-gold-old days I wanted my friends to load an Amiga game and I was able to tell them the name of the game just hearing the drive noise! I want that back

In addiction, my miggy had a louder noise compared to the others
