The World Of HOL

The HOL is a very international database; it was created by people in the UK, France, Sweden, USA, New Zealand and Australia and is used by people all over the world.

What I'd like to know is what "The Hall Of Light" is translated into as many languages as possible...

BTW, I'll find out if anyone puts forwards a couple of swearwords instead of the real translation! And no insults about prophets or anything in the translation; I don't want a fatwa on my ass.

Actually, the right sentence in portuguese would be "O Corredor da Luz", but I wouldn't agree with this translation. "O Salão da Luz" would be more correct.

Actually I would translate it in french like this: "Le corridor de Lumire". I dam not sure it is more accurate, but it sounds better!

I'll do it soon.

Cody doesn't need translators - he knows all languages!

I had a stab at the Greek version. I'll also check if the ancient Greek version differs from the modern one.

cody, if you want I can *try* to fix you a Rumantsch translation... (Rumantsch is a weird language, spoken in a small part of my already small country... actually it is the fourth official language here!)

If it mean corridor, then "O corredor da Luz" would be fine.

In the interests of making sure that we don't leave anything out, I must respectfully submit:

Pig Latin (based on English): Ethay Allhay ofyay Ightlay

I would submit Pig Latin translations based upon all of the other languages besides english, but the mere thought of doing so causes my head to begin throbbing uncontrollably. Besides, I don't know if anybody outside of the english speaking world has ever found themselves so lacking for productive activities to pursue that they have ever sunk to developing a non-english equivalent to Pig Latin.

And don't even get me started on Double Dutch

'Hall' in this case means an 'entrance hall' e.g. from the Latin 'Aula', which means the entrance to a Roman house.

So, you've been travelling through obscurity and darkness (ignorance), until you finally arrive at the entrance of light (enlightenment).

The Hall of Light would literally mean "The entrance of enlightenment" - this might be a better way to translate in some languages.

If you intend hall as an entrance, in italian it would become "L'atrio della luce".

Are you sure aula in latin means the entrance of a roman house? [ i've studied latin at the high school, but you can imagine what i remember of this difficult language... - anyway i'll try to find my latin-italian dictonary to check ]
