Performance Issue - ClassicWB Large Hard Drive Support (> 4GB)

I'm running classicwb-advsp on a 1200 with a DKB Cobra accelerator

Using the guide I upgraded my scsi device to the patched one.
Everything seemed to be great, except my performance sucked.

Using the patched scsi.device apparently doesn't work correctly with some hardware (Like my DKB Cobra). I was getting 800k a second with the patched scsi.device. Without the patch I get around 2M a second.

I figured out a solution for me using idefix and ndspatch, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

That patch is the only free option for scsi updates.

If it doesn't work for you, then as you said IDEfix is the way to go if you can find a key.

You don't need NSDPatch with IDEfix. IDEfix already supports NSD.

And if you ignore the nag requester, you don't really need a key. IdeFix is certainly the easiest way to use large HDs, CD rom/rewriters, etc. Quite painless and hassle free, and should even boost performance a little (on my 50mhz '030 based A1200: No IdeFix=2.5 MB per sec, IdeFix=2.7 MB per sec).

Ok Thorham I'll add idefix to the packs at some point as part of a silent update, just so users have the max choice for largeHD support. NSDpatch is already in there as another option.

800k/s actually is still pretty fast for an Amiga, but if you know you can get 2MB/s then it's hard to swallow. Of course that sounds like sequential reads - seek reading probably isn't as big a difference. Is the deivice a hard drive or flash device dabone?

Nice to know that the patch at least works, even though it may have issues with speed in certain hardware configs.

Speed was about the same on a Sandisk 4GB Ultra II CompactFlash (15mbs) and a 5400 RPM HD.

The key is available if you buy a copy of Amiga Forever, that's where I got mine.

I just got an Apollo 1240/40mhz and decided to try the patched scsi.device again.

Speed went back down to 1,254,227.

It might be free, but boy does it suck for performance.

So it's not just the Cobra that has this issue, you should really consider if the extra drive space is worth the huge cut in performance this causes with some accelerators.

Copyright sucks on ancient Amiga stuff - but my hands are tied. It's the only totally free option, but I'm sure 99% of people use IDEfix.

Did you try the different versions for the different Amiga models? Also 43.23 vs 43.24?

Also are you using it with the patched FFS or SFS?

Might all make a difference. I'll probably just simplify things and use IDEfix as the standard recommended replacement in the future. I'll have to do some testing myself. I'm sure people will find a way to remove the nag.

<InstallDrive>\Amiga Files\Shared\dir\Work\Software\IDEfix97\Register\license.doc
