Buying an LCD TV to use with Amiga...

I am currently look to buy a smallish (19" or so) TV. Amongs the uses I want it for, is that I want to use a classic Amiga (500 or 1200) via the RGB/SCART cable. I want to make sure that the TV will work with the Amiga.

Two questions.

1. What do I have to look for in the spec sheet for the TV?

2. How will games look?

for Amiga games:
Amiga monitor = best
TV CRT = very good
on LCD = bad, even on 17'', but you can still play if you want

tested on LCD 32'' and 17'', TVs CRT 14'', 15'' and Commodore Amiga monitor (14 or 15'')

Will all LC TV sets work?

Pixels are too exposed and visible, they are too sharp and big. Also vector objects looks like objects from 8-bit system...

What if using a scandoubler via VGA? Will it look better or worse? (or same?)

If i had to use lcd i would but plugging my Amiga into a 14" crt rgb gives better results frankly.Crystal and movement is perfect of course with 50 fps games

I don't know if lcd has improved any yet but i doubt any lcd is great tech for playing an Amiga on.The biggest problems i find are a bloating of pixels and that hideous delay

But if it was all i could play my Amiga on, i'd accept it happily enough as they are nice and slim

I was one of those "NO LCD TV" type of guys until I bought this Sony 40W4000 LCD TV. Plugged the RGB from A1200 into one of the SCART's in the back and lowandbehold - Amiga in its full glory. After fiddling with the settings a bit I can honestly say that the picture is really good. Atleast for LCD standards... from 3m viewing distance (which is my couch) it looks really nice and smooth. Altough the picture is still a bit on the sharp side (320x200 pixels tend to be a big huge on a 1920x1080 screen) I am pleased with it. Cannot believe it really

Oh, and there is NO delay whatsoever... which was a surprise too.

Isnt it spam?

There are some PC LCD display with RGB/SCART input! I read it on some forum, that guy reccomended that type to everybody. Before buying anything LCD, try it with Amiga! With some coloured game in motion.

When I get at home I try to find it and tell you.

I have a Samsung 510MP, which has PC input, TV input (aerial), scart (RGB and composite), SVideo and composite in.

Native resolution is 1024x768.

Works with RGB scart with appropriate voltages to pin 8 and pin 16... Doesn't work with standard output through VGA.

More testing forthcoming, including motion/etc...

But for 50 quid from ebay, I'm happy. I actually have a spare that I'd sell cheap (has a couple of dark areas on screen due to incredibly bad packaging from the seller)

I use a pair of Fujilink LCD 19" TV as my A1942 develops a series of internal bad contacts. One widescreen, other normal aspect ratio.

Both connected through the VGA in and using PAL/NTSC/whatever resolutions.

Both perform "OK". But I don't like the washed colours, nor the bad synchronized screen, nor the delay when playing games or demos.

Even with the best videoscaler you won't get a good or nearly perfect image with a LCD display. Interpolated graphics, motion blur, no smooth scrolling etc. Anyway, some people wouldn't notice any difference. It's up to you.

And try before buying.

I found good models reccomended by Amiga users:
Sammsung 225MW (22'')
LG M228WA (22'')

I can only second that. I tried some stuff on an DVDO Iscan VP50 Pro, which is a scaler around the EUR 4.000,- price tag. Simply one of the most expensive scalers you can buy. It has very advanced algos and runs using an own OS on an FPGA custom made board. Scales everything up to 1920 x 1080...

Plain an simple: I've never seen something scaler better BUT a CRT monitor stills looks best if you want to play Amiga stuff.

So if you can, get a CRT or an LCD with a resolution that matches what the machine will output. Some displays have a slightly higher resolution and windowbox stuff, others have slightly less and can chop things of instead of scaling. 1:1 pixel mapping usually looks best.

50Hz converted to 60Hz will always look jerky.

If anyone can actually recommend something, please do. Still looking for a simple LCD that will hook up to my CDTV.
