I'll limit my list to utilities for Workbench that are a MUST in my opinion for increasing the system's usability, and not applications or game-tools like WHDLoad or Deluxe Paint.

In no particular order (and more than 5):

MagicMenu (Useful menu system)
SnoopDOS (Necessary for diagnosis of misbehaving programs)
DirWork (My favourite file manager)
KingCON (Excellent shell replacement)
XFD (for mounting almost whatever type of image or storage device you can think of)
MultiCX (Cleanest patch ever)
ModePro (for promoting certain apps to my Productivity screen)

I was going to say much the same as Graham, but it woud only have been based on what I've heard about it making disks totally unrecoverable.

It's good to hear your positive report about DiskDoctor, seuden, but a possible limitation of DiskDoctor may be that it only works for OFS disks?

Thanks for your AmiBackTools recommendations, jPV and StingRay. I've just found me a copy of those utilities and will check them out!

I did only have an A500 so maybe that's why I had more success?

If your A500 had KS 1.x and was running WB 1.x, then I would say that's almost certainly the reason.

From the AmigaDOS 1.3 manual:

You can use DISKDOCTOR on both the standard file system and the FastFileSystem. However, to use DISKDOCTOR wit the FastFileSystem, YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT THE DOSTYPE KEYWORK IN THE MOUNTLIST IS SET TO 0x444F5301. Do NOT use DISKDOCTOR on a FastFileSystem partition if the DosType Keyword is not set correctly.

With Version 1.3, DISKDOCTOR checks for enough memory before starting operations and changes the boot block to type DOS."

So do you think that DiskDoctor may have got a bad reputation because it wasn't being used properly?

Though there are better programs than disk doctor, I think its biggest problem was that it got plugged by the o/s and told people to use it and promptly mashed the none DOS disks.
