What is below Superfrog's hand when he dies?

As can be seen on the screenshots below, circled in red, when Superfrog dies, there is some sort of spark below his right hand.

Does anyone know what it is? What it is refering to if that is a reference?

I have never been a fan of the game but I played it thrgouh once if I remember correctly. Besides, I checked the intro just before this post. And I didn't find anything about what that could be.

Initially I thought it could be some sort of bracelet/jewel belonging to the princess but saw no reference in the intro.

Although it could be a 'ouch, it hurts' symbol for when falling on spikes but as can be seen on the other screenshot, it also happens when you lose all your energy by hitting enemies.

Interesting. I never noticed that sparkle (yes I'm blind ). Would also say that it's something like the life energy/soul leaving the body.

I think it's his weapon - small "frog", dying with him.

Doesn't that happen even when you don't have the small frog thing though?

Yes, it happens even when he doesn't have collected the weapon (destructo-spud as it is called). My screenshots were taken from the very beginning of the first level.

Regarding the soul theory, I am no anthropologist but I don't know of any culture in which the soul escapes from the hand and oriented below.
Usually souls go to the sky, although in some cultures it may be considered it returns to the ground.

So SuperFrog is a member of Scientology? The link is quite obvious in fact:

Scientology -> Tom Cruise -> who called his child Suri -> Suri is pronounced as 'souris' (mouse in French. In fact, various people here are making fun of the Cruise for choosing that forename) -> mouse are animals like frogs and frog is another name for French in English (isn't it ) -> Superfrog worships Ron Hubbard and practices dianetics...

Yet, I'd like other opinions

IMHO, superfrog being a "cute" game, needed a "cute" way to display death. So they put a litlle star, and a smile on superfrog's face. and from it's right hand pose he could say: ooopsss, one life down, ah, what u gonna do, no worries lol

Ohhh, that's so sweet You'll get my vote
Like keropi and humble worm said, it might just be an extra effect that was added to the death animation without a deeper meaning. On the other hand... who knows

A little bit more of imagination please

From lilalurlpedia:

Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich originally intended to promote their upcoming StarGate movie through a videogame.
They had commissionned the developper Team17 for the task.
The game was to feature a friendly Goa'uld as the hero (in reference to an early version of the scenario some Goa'uld would help the humans, an idea which was later used in the TV series StarGate SG-1 through the characters of the Tok'Ra).

One noticeable feature was that the hero, being a Goa'uld, could not die. Instead, when he ran out of energy, he would use his hand device to call his ship ring teleporter and replenish his energy there. Of course, this would have a penalty for the time limit, forcing the players to restart the level should they die to often.

For unknown reasons, the project was cancelled.
However, some elements were reused in later Team17 projects.
What would later become the game Worms was initially a sub-game of the StarGate game and featured Goa'uld larvas.

Also, some frames of animation from the scene in which the Goa'uld would return to his ship to replenish his energy was reused in the game Superfrog.
In this game, when the hero dies, one can see the hero take a strange pose, smiling and having a little spark coming from his hand, before starting to ascend. This was clearly a variation of the original animation, with the sprite of the Goa'uld modified as a frog and the rings of the teleporter device removed. Strangely, Team17 forgot to remove the little spark from the hand device.
Let's see if people of aGTW can find us an early demo....

I quite like the 'angel' explanation though.

The Worms connection is bollocks!

Andy Davidson brought virtually the complete game to Team 17, they updated the graphics he was still designer and programmer of the Amiga version.

Is it just me or is Superfrog just showing his aching ass due to the spikes below?
You know: stars and other typical WarnerBros-esque cartoon iconography...

I always tought of it like that anyway! (...and sorry for the lack of imagination!)
