Is anybody ripping Amiga music anymore?

Hi guys,

I'm admin/ripper at SNDH.atari.org the primary depository for Atari ST music. I know on the Amiga side we have Exotica plus they myriad of MOD sites and Mirsoft.

However, I still note not all Amiga game tunes are ripped. For example, I recently ripped the tunes from Test Drive on the ST. I can't find the equivalent Amiga rip (horrid compiled code btw!).

So is the Amiga music ripping scene still active?

Cheers

Good question !

I think there's a general lack of motivation when we talk of ripping Amiga music

At least this could be a reason because not all Amiga tunes are still ripped

As for Test Drive, there is nothing that needs ripping. The music is on the disk in the "Songs" folder. No idea what format it uses, however - at least Eagleplayer can not play it. Certainly a custom format.

The Test Drive Title music on Modland seems to be a plain Protracker mod? https://files.exotica.org.uk/modland...ve%20title.mod same author made the c64 sid tunes: https://deepsid.chordian.net/?file=/....sid&subtune=3

https://www.exotica.org.uk/mediawiki...col=&siz=&ins=

as for ripping new stuff, im not even sure if any new stuff we have doesnt just give you plain access to the music or has it uploaded somewhere already?

IFF SMUS, but it may be subtly customized. DMCS, Sonix and Instant Music at least use some variants of SMUS, but I'm not sure if there are multiple versions of the format?

Yes. The ST version is iff-smus too. I think this format was used by music construction kit. But it appears a variant and cannot be loaded by the app. It’s a shame Amiga music is scattered over a number sites.

Well, my story about "ripping" happened during 2018-2020 or so for the SOAMC= ENDGAME, where I created a bunch of tools and automation to extract, rip, scan, double scan and identify over 88000 tunes during 1 year or something 24/7, scanning through millions of files to do this all automatically.

A couple of handful formats where also manually extracted by hand.

But, yeah, automated ripping can only go as far as using either own tools to find an song inside a binary files, along using ProWizard, ExoticRipper etc.... to catch the rest. Obscure or modified song file headers would fall through such an approach naturally.
