BBC Micro ROMs
I have a BBC Micro Model B and have started looking at ROM chips for the machine. Can anyone recommend any decent ones to get? games or programs in general?
Thanks. |

BBC was mainly Tape and Disk based. ROMS were mainly upgrades to its Disk Filing system, and serious s/w like word processors, spreadsheets and graphics etc etc, although the (pretty poor) Dr Who and the mines of terror came out on a combo of ROM and disk.
Have a look at: http://www.stairwaytohell.com/bbc/in...?page=homepage For pretty much everything BBC related. Best games for the beeb were: Elite - original version REVS - Geoff Crammonds original racing game before Stuntcar Racer and the F1GP series Repton - boulderdash type game Exile - adventure, also ported years later to the Amiga Maltese Joe's 3D Pool + loads more Last edited by OldB0y; 11 April 2014 at 15:28. |

No worries, I have a lot of happy childhood memories relating to the BBC B. Repton was pretty much the first game I ever finished, spent a lot of time driving round Silverstone in REVS, and a fair bit of time blowing things up/being blown up in Elite.
Some programmers really managed to squeeze some incredible stuff out of the Beeb, considering its hardware limitations compared to the C64 etc (Although the Beeb's 6502 was clocked at double the speed of the 64's 6510). |

Agreed, loved Codename: Droid - written by the same guys behind Shadow of the Beast. Also, Labyrinth by Acornsoft was another good one.
Some of the early Acornsoft arcade conversions like Arcadians (Galaxian), Meteors (Asteroids), Defender (not sure Acornsoft legally licensed the name) were pretty spot on. Firetrak (vertical scrolling shootem' up) and Galaforce 2 (shootem'up) also showed what the beeb was capable of in the right hands. Crazee Rider was a fast and fun motorbike game. |
