Amiga Developer CD
Hi
I recently purchased a copy of the Amiga Developer CD 2.1 from www.vesalia.de. The CD had a stick on label, like it was home made, which got me wondering, is this CD just being sold my making copies of an original or is it supplied by Haage & Partner? If it is just being copied and sold, that seems a bit unfair to me, so I would be prepared to put a copy on my web site http://amiga.maxiwebs.co.uk, but only if it's not copyrighted. Does anyone know the copyright status of this CD? Would it be wrong to put it on my web site as a free download for the whole Amiga community? I would be very interested in your views. petemaxi |

Surely the material is copyrighted and I am sure that Vesalia don't sell pirate copies.
Amiga companies cannot afford to produce silver CDs any more nowadays because of the small number of customers. |

I wish they would, the CD sticker got damp in transit and started to raise off the CD so half my drives wouldn't read it. I had to find a drive that did, make an ISO of it and burn it to a blank CD just so I could use it else where!
If I'm spending £15 on a CD, which is a bit steep, anyway, I'd at least expect a professional looking CD that worked on all my computers and didn't stop working if it got a bit damp. I have a printer that prints on to CDs as I'm sure many of us do. Printable CDs are very cheap and the final result usually looks quite professional. Sorry but we're getting a bit off topic here, I'm not that bothered about the CD so long as the content's good. Let's get back to the copyright/distribution business the thread started with! |

I have heard of software that allows you to use a DVD/CD-ROM drive to "print" an image onto the label side of a CD. Not used it myself. Regards, Lonewolf10 |

My 2.1 developer CD is an original silver press from Haage & Partner. I suspect these have now dried up and Versalia has acquired a license to distribute CDR copies. But this is my guess

I have original copies of both the Amiga Developer CDs V1.1 (May 1996) and V2.1 (December 1999).
Whilst the V1.1 CD (Schatztruhe) is silver, the V2.1 CD (Haage & Partner), which I bought new in 2001, has a slight, but unmistakeable, greenish tint. And yet the artwork is printed directly to the surface of the CD's label side. I also have original Amiga OS 3.9 CDs with both red and pink (SE) artwork which have silver playing surfaces, but I have heard that Amiga OS 3.9 CDs recently bought from Vesalia have turned out to be supplied on CD-R media. I'm sure that Thomas is correct in his assumption that some Amiga companies can no longer afford to produce silver CDs when where are only a small number of companies. However, this in not true in every case. After all, Amiga OS 4.x (Hyperion) are currently supplied on silver media. Nevertheless, I'm also sure that Vesalia are not selling pirate copies. Incidentally, petemaxi, I have a spare original copy of the Amiga developer V1.1 CD (disc only), which contains a great many files in common with the Amiga developer CD V2.1. If you would like it, I will send it to you for the cost of postage if you PM me your address details. |
