Is this a guess or experience? Because it doesn't seem likely to me that the culprit should be found after U34 but rather inside U34 or some point before it since the signals are not multiplexed after U34 and this error seems to be related to the multiplexing or demultiplexing of the joy signals.

Never had one failing with joystick but had similar problem with the mouse. Although, if it works without expansions it may suggest it will not make the difference, it is worth to try ...
