SS came with a HD install script (IIRC it was on disk 2?).

All SSI Goldbox AD&D Games on DOS where similar on DOS. Only the two later games, Pools of Darkness and Dark Queen of Krynn where a bit better on DOS.

A good rule of thumb is that if a game was published after about 1992, it's better on MS-DOS. From about 1991-92 quite a few MS-DOS titles looked nice with their fancy 256-colour graphics but the sound was dreadful (as an example, look at the MS-DOS version of Eye of the Beholder - lovely graphics, rubbish sound. Thank goodness for the AGA version).

I've just taken a look at Turrican II on Abandonia and, erm, I don't agree. It looks like the game's been re-imagined as a Saturday morning cartoon.

He, that is actually pretty spot on It went from nicely shaded graphics to flat cartoony graphics. But of a shame actually, it could have been quite a cool port.

What is the best DOSBox frontend for Windows in your opinion?

I would like to give a go in some of the games mentioned here. Thanks.

It's easy without any frontend.

Indeed. And easier still with a frontend. Thanks for your suggestions.

I'm trying DBGL now and later see what D-Fend Reloaded offers.

I think small DOS program DOS Controller (Norton Commander clone) is enough for file handling. For me nothing more is required because default DOS Box settings are accurate for most games.

Holy thread necromancy, Batman, this one sure came back from the dead... Anyways, I tend to think that games are best on whatever platform they were initially designed for. Thus games like Team 17's were best on Amiga, even though they were from the era when PC had already become more powerful, but games like LucasArts' which were designed for PC tended to be better on PC.

Yes I see your point and the reason for that. But I don't like to fiddle with DOS programs and a point and click interface for me, is the way to go. Well, Workbench spoiled me on that matter, way back in 1988.

D-Fend Reloaded is really powerful and for me, the final choice. Easy install of zipped games, every Dosbox setting customizable. A breeze to use, you can forget you're using DOS, really.

Enough OT on this thread already!

Bah, nothing beats a 386DX/40 or 486DX/66 with a good MIDI card and SB for DOS gaming.

Here are some games that I can think about...

- prince of persia (Amiga version was slloowww)
- Pinball Illusions (didn't have a chance to play other ports but this one is perfect: perfect scrolling when run under true DOS, same music,...)
- Furry of the Furries: perfect scrolling
- Flashback
- AnotherWorld (I would say this one is on par)
- All adventure/RPG that were released on both but came with 256 colours, more animations, faster,... on the PC (LucasArts classics: Monkey Island 1/2, Indy series, Eye of the Beholder, King's Quest VI, Innocent until Caught, Future Wars, Simon, Beneath (although the Amiga version was a wonderful assembly port: fast and beautiful,...)
- James Pond 2
- Some Team17 ports also came with perfect scrolling/animation but I don't remember about the Music (Project X, SuperFrog,...)... close to on par again

I guess that by 91-93 most PC games had superior graphics/animation but choppy scrolling and not so good sound but from 94 PC was much better for everything... And you didn't have to choose between music *or* sound as you did in a lot of Amiga games.

If you look carefully at the history, from 92 lots of games were PC-only (simulations, Alone in the Dark,.. lots of nice games that couldn't be developped for the Amiga) while other games had PC port. The market was already lost.

At this time I was a big Amiga fan and only recently I discovered all the gems I couldn't play because I was so close-minded... But better late than never

Dune and Feebles and Fiends 1 were great for PC. I played Amiga versions, though

Yeah, some post 92 DOS games were better, but setting them up was a pain in the ass. Amiga was just, chuck in the floppy and play. AMIGA > PC <place anti-trolling "IMO" here>

True, but the thread isn't about which one is the easiest to setup... So this is irrelevant here
