Lock up problem with DCE Typhoon 1230
hello buddies,
some of you may have followed the thread where I fixed ami-junkie's sound problem. unfortunately after that ami found out he had a stability problem with the miggy too. he sent the machine over to me to have a look. Indeed the 68030 (and 68882) on the typhoon were heating up, which most probably is the cause of the problem. I had a check and I have reasons to believe the 68030 on the typhoon is not a true 40 MHz cpu. It looks like it's a 25 MHz part overclocked to 40 MHz. The picture on the BBoAH also shows a unit with a heatsink. The speed markings on both the CPU and FPU are scratched, which is always a bad sign ... I had a search and found this about the processor ... mc68030fe o4d66c qeke9313 it's probably a 16 MHz part then ? what was DCE thinking ? are they out of their minds ? The FPU reads MC68882 OC35H, it looks like a genuine 40 MHz part ... so, what would you suggest us do ? install a heatsink on the CPU ? or downclock the board to 25 MHz or something ? any ideas appreciated ... |

Just a little more info, this board was bought from Softhut as part of the new batch of GVP boards that were run, has anyone else who bought the boards have this problem?

Lack of suitable parts are not an excuse! Amigamaniac from Australia located a 33MHz QFP unit (exactly the same model this accelerator of yours have) to fix my GVP Impact II.
And was cheap! |

of course replacing the CPU is another option. but replacing a QFP processor is beyond my skills atm I think. If there's anyone willing to do this for ami_junkie, please contact him ...
the problem here is, this board should've never shipped with this processor in the first place. I didn't know this was one of the new GVP batch of boards (and yet the silkscreen says DCE ? ) me thinks something fishy going on here ... with all the CPU scratching and all ... |

My friend: swap the crystal for another one with 25MHz for the moment. This will make the board functional again while our friend AJ sort the things out with SoftHut/GVP-M.
Is the crystal soldered down to the board or is a socketed unit? {EDIT} Soldered! Bastards! |
