The 4 disk version without a doubt.

The not so "Special Edition" should have been named "Lite Edition" if you ask me.
Level 1 and 2 has been shortened a good deal and the final bomb run level and outro is nowhere to be found.

The original version is more a technical demo than a real game: gameplay is way too hard and most players will get stuck to level 2, if they ever get there...

A lot of Amiga games were like this: too hard, not so much fun playing them.

I would say the SE version too.

Anyone tried the DOS version as well ? Looked like a good conversion by then: is it based over the original or SE version ?

I really never understood the "too hard problem" about this game.

You just need memorize the levels as the baddies always attacks in the same way.

DOS version is based on SE but it's not as good as the Amiga version.
Check the zone for the DOS CD image.

I would go with the original version, too. As for difficulty:
I remember when I first got a copy of Project-X, the friend who did the copy only copied the first two disks and said, I'd never need the following ones. You can imagine my disappointment when I finally killed the 2nd world boss.

Mainly the difficulty comes from the fact, that the weapons are degraded when you do not pay attention and lose a life. A bit unbalanced in that respect, imho. Sometimes you simply do not have a fair chance to get proper weaponry again if you die in a difficult passage (there are quite a few).

As a sidenote. X2 the PSX successor is not too bad either, especially in two player mode. Unfortunately it does not work properly on the slim ps2.

Would be cool if Psygore could adapt the trainer from SE version to original version or weapon select feature.

I have to admit I like both versions!

the SE is an easier version thats no doubt - its kinda like the popcorn version to the full-course meal that is the original.

so pending on your mood one can kick-it old-skool-hard for that propper check me out on level 3 buzz - or just enjoy the amazing ECS eyecandy of the SE version =)

SE version is globally easier but they fixed some bugs: level 2 boss cannot be defeated anymore by flying to a safe spot and kill it with homers

SE is protected RN-track format = $1800 bytes per track: 160*$1800*3= 3 megs
Orig is RN-dostrack = $1600 bytes per track: 160*$1600*4 = 3,6 megs (there may be some spare tracks on the last disk)

SE is missing enemies (AFAIR at least the missiles from level 1). Maybe the end is shorter I don't remember (so hard that you rarely saw the end levels)

Project-X is one of the rare OCS games (alongside superfrog) to take advantage of 2 megabytes. My old A500 had 1.5 Megs of slow installed, the game used it to avoid loading. Team 17 ruled.

is there a list somewhere of all these games ?
Or perhaps we should try to create this list.

You're better off playing Apidya, Disposable Hero and eventually X-Out & Z-Out instead, those are proper horizontal scrolling shmups.

No such list as far as I am aware, so I will need to start a new thread.

This thread however will provide some good initial help in setting up a list:

+1 for a list, would be good. Or maybe the info could be added to HOL. Then we just have to select extra memory within a search.
