Amiga 600 - Hard Disc not recognised

Hi all!

Wondered if I was missing something obvious here, since I've not played with real Amiga's for a long time!

I'm trying to stick a 4gb hard disk (2.5) into my 600, just got the IDE cable. Plugged in, the drive spins up fine and dandy, but the A600 ignored it and put up the insert floppy screen. I booted up using the HDInstall disk I had from my 1200 3.0 sets, and ran it. It didn't see the hard disk at all.

This disk works fine on my A1200. It's 3.0, so I'd understand if I needed to re-format it, however I can't see it at all in HDToolbox.

Version of kickstart on my 600 is 2.0 (37.299).

Have I missed something really stupid?

Thanks guys! Sorry that was a long post

Bad luck mate. That kickstart version doesn't support HD (crazy I know). Had one of these myself. Had to upgrade.

Nice on ppill, thanks!

That's a bit bizarre - why on earth did they bother putting the ide interface on and a cradle? Strange!

Ah well, I guess if I'm upgrading it, I may as well stick kick 3.1 on it. Anyone got a kick 3.1 for a600 lying around?

Cheers!

Jon

I have asked myself that so many times its unreal, I thought it had problems with the PCMCIA slot too, but that might have been some random thing I read somewhere and got confused.

God, damit Commodore and you wonder why it all went to bits...

It doesn't have to be 3.1. You can get a 2.05 v37.350 one (or a v37.300 but some people reported problems with drives larger than 40MB). It supports both IDE and PCMCIA.

There's another way but you won't be able to autoboot from the hard disk. Ask someone to extract scsi.device form a 3.1 kickstart and make a special boot floppy that would mount the drive. More here

I guess they wanted to get their new baby (2.05 which was a MAJOR upgrade) out on more affordable hardware. Too bad so many programs and games refused to run (can't really blame C= for that).

Might play with the scsi.device thing just for fun!

Re. the kick3.1 thing, I just thought that if I'm upgrading anyway, and I *might* mod it later (loved Zetro's dvd writer in the back of his 600!) that I may as well have the 3.1 just to run later Amiga OS versions later.

Cheers!

Yeah, it really depends what you wanna do with the machine. 3.1 leaves less memory to play with and there's not much on a standard A600 (1MB).

Yes, 37.350 was the final release that saw hard disks. Strange, I know, but the 37.299 was never marketed as A600HD.
