A1200, A2000, A3000, etc. floppy drive sounds
Ages ago, Toni added A500 floppy sound emulation. If the other Amigas have different floppy drive sounds, he could include them as well.

It doesn't need to involve Toni. It's just wav files- you can record them and share with us.

In my experience, Amiga floppy drive sounds are more dependent on the floppy drive used than the Amiga model it's fitted to.

The most notable sound difference to me is between kickstart 1.x and 2.x+ on the same drive, rather then between a500 and a600/a1200. like seeking takes much longer on the older kickstart.

My A500 drive sound is unique lol. All my friends at the time had almost the same drive sound, a quite discreet one. Mine is really really noisy, i would do a video to make you hear ! Practically it can wake you up if you are sleeping ah ah ! With some particular games, like the bad cracked versions of hudson hawk, it is like if a bomb explodes inside the main board lol. But it can be usefull too. Thanks to my so high drive volume, since always i know if a track marked '0' with x-copy (during a format or a copy) is in fact corrupted or not. When a '8' appears, my drive is ALWAYS emitting a kind of sound "tic tic tic". The interesting thing is that this sound appears also on certain "0" tracks, meaning that they are "at the limit", like "almost corrupted" or "about to create errors in the future". More over the "tic tic tic" volume is all the more high than the error seems serious. It helped me during all my amiga days, and was a precious help to make my new floppies collection . "The only way to be sure that this formatted disk will last in the next years". When i formatted my floppies, i classified the ones all marked with "0" into 3 categories of reliability, depending my "tic tic tic" sound level, writting a sign on the disk ah ah ! And it works, like it always worked : perfectly. After years when i did again my collection, the only games that didn't work anymore were those marked with "~" (for "so so" lol). Incredible isn't it ? Note that with my A1200 i am totally blind, no specific error sound at all, an entire floppy marked with "0" in verify mode in x-copy (especially in format mode) can be corrupted or "about to be".
"How to do ear copy" looooooool !!! Sooooo, be carefull guys if i upload a WAV of my drive sound so lol, it will make shake your PC . A funny and strange anecdote i wanted to share with all of you. P.S : For this reason, all the copy parties were to be at my home lol, what a mess ah ah ! Last edited by Vollldo; 20 September 2012 at 11:27. |

I feel like A500s have a more "muffled" sound whereas A600s and A1200s have a cleaner and louder sound. When you look at the cases, kinda makes sense, the 1200/600 have a tinier structure than the A500. There's more space in an A500 to have air and muffle the sound of the drive. Also, when the disk drive goes from one track to the other, it sounds smoother on the A500 than on one of the others. But that might have to do with the disk drive type. Never heard any desktop Amigas so I can't say anything there. How are these sounds recorded? I remember trying to record a disk drive with a mike once and it was pretty much disastrous, I got a load of other noises in. |

I have the A500, A2000, A3000 and A4000. The drive sound for the A500 Seems to me to be the most distinct. The drives in the big box amigas aren't anywhere as loud as the 500.

I recall having a program that generated music from the disk drive! How good this was to the motor/life of the floppy drive I have no idea - but it was fun!
