CD32 Laser question.
Please be kind - I'm a little embarrassed about this one...
Some months ago I bought a replacement laser for my CD32. I've only just gotton round to fitting it - why? To busy + too many projects = I rarely finish anything I start. Oh, and there's nothing wrong with my CD32... Why bother? I'm hoping it will read CD-R's a bit more reliably. I bought one of these: Hmmm, blurry... You'll notice it says 'remove antistatic lock before use'. Here's the source of my embarrassement: I know that such a thing is usually a solder pad to be broken, but for the life of me I can't see where it is... Further piccies: An 'X marks the spot' would be nice. More focussed... Booze, again... |

I didn't see any joined pads. For my POW, the unit is ready to use.

Is it the same as your old one? Can you compare the two for any differences?

Thanks for the answers chaps
Sadly though compatible with the CD32 (I have on good authority) it isn't quite the same so compare & contrast doesn't help. I've tried fitting it too, sadly no-go, so I must assume there is indeed a link to be removed somewhere... The only place that looks even remotely like a link to me is bottom-right of the middle image. I took this to be a surface-mount part, but could be wrong. I'm tempted to remove it & see what happens - it's dead anyway. But I'd be kind of p*ssed if 'tomorrow' somebody says: 'You didn't want to do that, you wanted to do it like this.' And I'm left with a (not cheap) lump of carp that could have been fine for want of one bit of info... Ho, hum. So far it's been a lucky day: I've pushed my poor soldering skills to the limit & gotten away with it. Maybe I can push it a bit further... |

Have you googled the part to see what information you can find?

Funny you should say that, I did ages ago when I bought the thing & came up blank.
I was just going to again before beddy-byes. |

This may sound daft but I would have thought that you wouldn't need a soldering iron to remove the anti-static lock (whatever it is) but would be a tool-less operation. Is there something that is loose that can be pulled/lifted off?
Edit: My next reply makes total bollox of the above ;-) Dave G Last edited by davideo; 16 August 2008 at 01:48. Reason: Edit: Added information |
