Isn't it time to drop DirectDraw support?
I've not played with WinUAE for quite a long time but recently fired up the latest version and tried to play Deluxe Galaga. It was painfully slow and I spent ages fiddling with options trying to find out what was going on.
I eventually found that DirectDraw was selected for some reason although I'm sure my old configurations had previously selected Direct3D by default. So my question to Toni is 'isn't it time to drop this god-awful super-slow DirectDraw in favour of Direct3D only'? DirectDraw is well past its use by date. |

I just ran a quick test using AIBB and here DirectDraw is faster than Direct3D. So it is best not to generalize just based on your own hardware.

No. It isn't going away soon. D3D is the default anyway.
But "quick" tests are totally worthless. AIBB benchmarks in fast emulation are mostly worthless, they all finish far too quickly. Run same test few times and you can get very different results.. |

There are people (at least one) who run WinUAE on a machine without admin rights so that installing DirectX is not possible.

Ok I didn't realise it was actually quicker on some hardware. The difference is huge on my machine. I thought it was mostly the CPU which WinUAE relies on but I guess I was wrong. Looks like my Geforce GTX 980 is actually making a bigger difference to emulation speed than I thought.

DirectDraw is practically unusable with some later Windows/hardware/driver/something combination in full screen.

Actually, DDraw is really useful for running WinUAE under Wine since D3D doesn't seem to work

I don't see why support for DirectDraw should be dropped... it isn't the default renderer anymore, so if you don't want to use it, simply ignore this setting.
