Sorry about mac users, I was a bit hard when I blacklisted "Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15" from EAB.
I removed that rule

Thanks for fixing this I had the unfortunate timing of upgrading my Mac OS and afterwards not being able to connect to EAB. I was well angry at Apple so I went back and reinstalled everything to the previous OS lol - life without EAB is just not right!

The site seemed to be suffering from this continuously from 1am today (GMT) until now.

More bots?

So, if the server is saying it's busy, the best course of action is to create a thread asking for more traffic to talk about why it is so busy?

...

Kidding!!! ;-)

The server Blitter was overwhelmed by the number of bots.
Since 90's, we are waiting for upgraded Blitter.

I wonder if it would be feasable to rate limit just anonymous visitors (i.e. not logged in) and not logged in users.
I don't know the server configuration for EAB but if there's an nginx or other proxy manager, I think this should be doable.

wouldnt bots just throw more of themselves at a server at that point to get the data they want quicker?

hmmm not sure I follow. Do you mean that bots would create a lot of spam accounts to work around the rate limiting? Do we know if EAB signups are moderated?

What I meant is that there are a few ways I can think of to implement a smarter rate limiting:
1) Rate limit clients bearing no authentication (cookie or else)
2) greylist offending IPs
3) an increasing backoff mechanism for stubborn offenders
All this can probably be done at the reverse proxy level + maybe an IP caching layer using Redis or memcached.

But, yeah, talk is cheap and probably time is scarce :-)

I'm just thinking that upgrading the hardware will just push the problem to the future.

The problem yesterday wasn't related to traffic (bots, guests or otherwise).

Confirmed, the last week slow down was related to the hourly generation of all browsers in current month : https://stats.abime.net
Loop was insane (64 MB html size for all browsers - including a lot of fake chrome with random number), so I limitated the output to top 5000 (1.5 MB), much better and less CPU

Hmmm. I think Google/Youtube's mission against adblockers was the cause then

RCK,

Are you blocking Google search crawlers?

Lately when I've been searching using Google I can't find specific EAB forum posts anymore (with "site:eab.abime.net"), used to work better in the past, usually end up doing "Advanced Search" in the forum instead.

Looks like only ChatGPT blocked in the robots.txt file for eab.abime.net.

Code:
User-agent: GPTBot
User-agent: CCBot
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Disallow: /
User-agent: *
Allow: /
Perhaps it's just Google search turning less useful, seems to be a trend.
