Son Of A.......!

Diddnt thing most people would see this buried in another thread so heres a new one for it!

Taken from the "accelerating" thread:

That sounds like the bugger, It has a simm slot on top of the card and one on the bottom, in workbench it tells me that its:
CPU:68030
FPU:68882
MMU:68030

I am however having some problems with it, sometimes when I turn on the amiga 1200 with the card in it does not boot or gives me a software failure screen, when on occasion it boots into WB the mouse arrow moves eratically and workbench usually crashes.
There are two jumpers on the board, one to disable the ram and one to disable the scsi, with both disabled I see the same problems, before it dies the power light tends to flicker!

Im using a 60w A500 supply with my A1200 which has 3.0 roms and is running WB 3.0 a buffered IDE interface, 1.5gig 2.5 HDD (internal) and a Surf Squirrel interface.

Anyn ideas? my first time with an accelerator so im stuck on this one!

Below is a scan of the card:

There could be several reasons: heat, dirty contacts, bad (or missing) RAM, bad processor, bad software (e.g. a virus) etc.

My system is working fine without the board in, I also get the same problems without any ram in the board.

So the 68030 can still get too hot or the board has loose contacts.

These are common faults in computers of this age, especially in cases without active cooling. Try to clean the board and run it without disk in drive with open case for some time. Then check the temperature of the chips. If you burn your fingers, it is too hot (remember to ground your hands before you touch electronic parts).

That little black heat sink gets quite hot but no so it burns me, unfortunately im using a desktop case so slapping fans on it is out of the question, I cant fit the expansion slot door back on the bottom as it is!

May be I,m mad but !

I had a simlar problem of overheating { 7 yrs ago } when using a 1230 card of the same configeration being swapped between my 3.1 romed 1200 and my sons older 3.0 it overheated in his machine becaused his edge contacts were oxidized and by carefully cleaning them with solvent { Of course with the back off and the shield lifted & not connected to power ! never know who,s reading this } It then worked fine in his machine with 8 meg RAM hope this helps

Send a message via ICQ to Severin
you could also carefully take the CPU and FPU chips out of their sockets and clean the contacts on them, the best way to clean chip legs is to gently rub the chip accross a piece of photocopy paper (it's slightly rougher than inkjet papers) you will get a lot of grey oxidation coming off, but after a while you get nice bright shiny contacts

If your going to keep using the squirrel, disable the scsi (if the board was well designed it should switch off the scsi chip - the one with the heatsink)

the best way to cool it is to get 2 386 cpu coolers (not easy) andstick them on the cpu and maybe the fpu (you can power them by splicing into the floppy power cable. To make room for them get some stick-on rubber feet to raise the 1200 up about 10mm...

You've probably thought of this, but just in case

The accelerator you have, isn't that one that's labelled as being "not PCMCIA friendly" on Amiga-Hardware. Could it be a conflict with the Squirrel?

Also, you say the power light flickers, could that be power problems? Is there another PSU you can try? If you live anywhere in the North West I have a few in the drawer you could try.

Don't think Staff's qualifies as 'North West' mate!

Hmmm, should have seen your location on your postings says Staffs. i have no defence, except to blame the stella

I live in Wigan, 'bout 30 miles from manchester.

If you get stuck with this and are over this way, maybe we could sort something out. I have an Amiga Technologies A1200, Blizzard '030-50, and also have an Apollo 030LC and numerous PSU's and SIMMS in the drawer. With a bit of swapping around we should be able to work out what is actually causing the problem!
