Floppy drives

Hi, Im a total noob with Amiga kit so these may be stupid questions...

1 - Is it possible to use PC floppiy drives in either the Amiga main case or an external case?

2 - Are any modifications needed?

3 - Is it possible to boot from PC formatted floppies?

4 - Has anyone every used one of the floppy drive emulators like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2909604401...84.m1438.l2649

I have an A500 and A500+

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave,

Yes, it is possible to use PC floppy drives both inside the Amiga main case and in an external case.

However, note that only certain drives may be compatible and in either case it will be necessary to modify the floppy drive interface or use an adapter, such as Stedy's PC floppy adaptor for Amiga:

PC floppy adaptor for Amiga

For use inside the Amiga main case, you will have to remove the fascia, cut back the metal top-plate, use spacers to raise the drive to align with the slot in the case and modify te eject button to align with the hole in the case.

It is not possible to boot from a PC-formatted floppy disk.

There is plenty of experience with floppy drive emulators among our members:

1+2: Some PC drives can be used directly after modifications have been made. Some external drives use PC drives with the modifications on the interface PCB.
3: No, maybe unless you have some PC board in the Amiga, like what you can get for an A2000. On a plain 500, you can't.
4: Specs says FAT12, so probably PC filesystem only. HxC is a better way to go for the Amiga.
