After Burner

http://hol.abime.net/3207 is actually After Burner 2! Proof: Let the intro run for a while until the vector bobs appear, there clearly is "II" visible then. So the name should be changed and the "has a clone" comment should be removed as well.

The european Activision version has a II as well if you leave intro running.

Hmm, indeed. Well, at least the name should be changed to After Burner 2 then.

Thanks Belg and Retroplay - will have to make a note of it under conversions. Changing the title of the game entries to After Burner II, though, might just add to the confusion for HOL visitors given the titlescreens and box contents are all labelled "After Burner". The annoying things that game publishers do sometimes.......

ABII is essentially the same game as "After Burner", but there are a few differences, mainly the fact that it is possible to control your plane speed.

After Burner II is in fact After Burner game code Revision II.

The same applies on Galaxy Force, my colleagues at The Dumping Union found the revision I of the game, which was erased to install revision II (Galaxy Force II) due to bugs/problems on revision I.

Absolutely.

The revision I is actually the initial Japanese release and Sega suffixed it with a II for the international releases. Aside from a few improvements here and there and some changes in level sequence AfterBurner I & II (arcade) are essentially the same game.

Most computer/console ports target AfterBurner II.

The name on the box and commonly known name (plus all reviews) are Afterburner, it would be crazy to change it. A note and alias is enough.

If we changed HOL to every title screen, many other games would have to be changed. Apidya has a II written on it. Many other games have extra words or spelling mistakes on the title compared with the box.

I know, old thread, but I just pulled out my US Sega Afterburner for some reason (can't remember why now...) and got checking some things and I am confused... ;-)

I loaded it up and yep I have the full screen (Sega, not Activision) version, I think...

Then I look at the screenshots on the back of the box appear to be for the Activision version??? With that border frame...

Do I have the wrong disk for my box? So I check HOL... My game looks like the Sega version according to HOL screenshots...

So I look at the HOL back of the box image and the screenshots on the back of the box have the border frames like the Activision version? Same as my box.

So I then go to the HOL entry for the Activision version and look at it's box and on the back, there are the screenshots for that version and the screenshots also have that border frame ...and ??? what?
That last screenshot on the "budget release - front" has a screenshot (just one of the three) that looks full screen? Like the Sega version? (Not saying it is, but there is no border art like the Sega version..)

Then I go to youtube and check some vids...
Yep, looks like I have the Sega version and the game is fullscreen, and the Activision version has that border frame...

Admittedly, I haven't played it that much and maybe that border goes on and off or something???
Just has me confused (which isn't tough to do)... ;-)

So... I only know that there are in fact two separate releases. You have to keep in mind that each box was made for several versions of the game on different systems (which could explain the screenshot 'mismatch').

Just had a quick look again and it seems like all the screenshots and scans are associated with the right entry, but if there is something specific that doesn't seem right please let us know.

Yeah, I think they are all associated with the right entries on HOL...

It just threw me off when the screenshots on the box didn't match the version of the game in the box.

But that apparently is the way they shipped it...

Just seems weird to me that you have written a very different version of a game for the same system, and then you are totally fine with the wrong screenshots on the back of the box. ;-)

I mean, I see that all the time with the same game/different systems. Just didn't expect it for different versions of the same game on the same system. ;-)
