Exclamation How to upgrade your GoldenGate486slc/25mhz to 486slc2/50mhz!

I succesfully upgraded the 25mhz 486slc cpu of my Goldengate to a 486slc2 cpu that is 50mhz! without any soldering ofcourse!
first you need the Cyrix 386to486 piggy-bag upgrade cpu, that was intented for 386SX cpu's...

I bought this brand-new old stock still sealed from eBay for 25$

then you just install it on-top of the existing slc cpu...

... and you boot the GoldenGate486slc as normal.... but you notice something different on the cpu clock reading....

and it actually works! the gg486 is faster and u only have to run a small prog on autoexec.bat to enable internal cache and pipelining! yeah!!

lol musashi, u donated it to me
I am still investigating though, because the fpu check on the slc2-driver-disk , after doing tests finds that this fpu is not compatible...
maybe the checks are hacky and cause probs with the gg486 either way...
u wanna check it? I have zoned the driver-disk , look inside the FASMATH folder !!!

edit: can you also run sysinfo from the dos utils I zoned and tell us what rating the original 25mhz cpu has? I forgot to run it, and I don't want to stress the fragile clip-on cpu (it also has another part that secures it, not show on the pic...)

yeah, unfortunatelly we are only limited to 386sx cpu upgrades....
BUT, there is a 486slc2 made by IBM that is the same size-pins as my cyrix one, and it is actually almost as fast as the DX2/66 ...!
but finding it is quite difficult...

HERE is some info on it, it is 33/66mhz...

I have the benchmarks for you (looks like your machine toasts this one ):

CPU Speed: 14.5
Disk Speed: 9.9 (Dedicated IDE drive)
Overall: 12.9

The FAST switch for GG didn't make any difference at all.

I also tried the Cyrix tests and they "seemed" to run ok on my FPU here... so I don't know what to suggest for you But they are pretty poorly coded and difficult to understand. They just seem to check for errors from your results against what they are expecting.

what? really? the 50mhz upgrade scores 58.6 and the 25mhz one 14.5??? with the bench I zoned? wow, talking about HUGE improvement!!!
maybe those bad coded fpu tests don't like the 50mhz slc2 with the ITT-fpu combo... lol perhaps I find some real dos prog that works with fpu to test...

Yes indeedy I guess not only doubling the speed but also adding internal cache and pipelines makes a large difference. Your system rrrocks Could you do another test with your pipelines/cache disabled... would be interesting.
