Surely Donkey Kong deserves that title! I'm sure most of you know this story, but just in case some don't.. the game was supposed to be called "Monkey Kong" (which would make *some* sense, as the game featured a gorilla) but there was an error while they were printing the box and it was too expensive to correct!
Now imagine how different our lives would have been if LucasArts had released "The Secret of Donkey Island"! :
An honourable mention: The shareware adventure "I rescued Elvis from communist alien jerks"!

Hmmm...didn't it originate in the arcades? And it had a box?

I believe part of that is true, however, I just think it got mixed up somewhere while being passed around. Another case of title snafu's is Continental Circus; there was a translation error from Japanese to English and they ended up somehow with Circus, rather than Circuit. Of course a racing game called Continental Circuit makes far more sense, and the word Circus in that game title makes zero sense.

LOL! Hey Alkis, thats a cool story. Never heard that one You know, Pac-Man was supposed to be "Puck-Man" [he's shaped like a hockey puck], but Midway decided to change the name because deliquent kids could change the name on the arcade machines to a dirty word

Origin of 'Donkey Kong'

There are a few theories on this. I personally thought Miyamoto looked in a Japanese/English dictionary for a translation of the Japanese word for stupid/goofy.

Which I don't think DK is, btw. Stupid, that is. He has something of the noble beast about him. I always play him at multi-player N64 games. A very fearsome prospect at Mario Tennis, I can tell ya.

Oo oo oo! I'm in a monkey mood now. Gimme banana.

From what I heard, he looked for a word that means "Stupid/goofy" , because he thought the game wouldn´t be a sucess

Makes enough sense here in Italy though (and i think in Europe too), cause a lot of people refer to the F1 Championship (and all the pilots, cars, mechanics, etc...) calling it the F1 Circus.

I guess it originated from all the Team trucks that go around the world resembling a circus when it moves from town to town.

Smile Origin of Continental Circus

Actually that is not correct. The original name for the game was "Continental Circuits" but when they transmitted it the person thought they said "Circus" and thus named the game like that for the English market!

I still have the old C+VG magazine with the article in somewhere...

Yeah, I always thought the game was called Continental Circus because of that. Here in Brazil we usually call it F1 circus too, and I am sure it´s because the way the teams travel around the world

Well, I knew it was something like that. And I have that issue too, which is where I'd read that, I just crossed up the story a bit.
