Well, as someone who has bought several mini consoles I'll admit it's the combination of looks and ease of use that managed to get me to spend my money. It's simply easier and more convenient to plug in a NES/SNES/MD mini for a quick spin than it is many other options. Especially as both the MD/SNES version include at least one fairly rare game. I know I could use an emulator as well but somehow it "feels" differently to me (even though I know damn well they're just a miniature computers running some emulator in a nice case).
And they look cute. Which does apparently play a role lol |

The fact that it is just emulation, with little to no access to the guts, on some lower-power hardware than what I already have, is what keeps me away from all these "Mini" consoles. Why would I buy a C64 Mini when I can run a bare-metal fork of VICE on an RPi with only one or two frames of input lag versus real hardware? Why buy that emulated Genesis with its locked-in game selection when I have a great emulator on my PC and cheap legit ROMs from Sega themselves through Steam?
If I'm just going to be running an emulator anyway, I'd rather do it on my existing hardware with its better performance and customizability. |

@coldacid
you (and probably me) belong not to the group of customers targeted by these devices. but we have to admit: they do sell quite well. |

@EAUniW
I am confident such a device would find its customers. So: how are you going to secure the rights? Trademark, logo, kickstart, rights for every singe game included, ... who is going to code this "frontend"? If your basis for emulation is UAE better be sure to fulfill all terms of the GPL and make it open source... |

I think the best chance of anything like this happening is the C64Mini guy doing it, already has the ability to coordinate, sell, box, get licences, make working keyboard, frontend, do moulds etc
There was a rumour he was looking at a possibility of doing it, but i guess the main stumbling block is the Amiga IPs..... blood and stone comes to mind again. |

The problem is - again - if it's so easy, why has nobody else done it yet? Of course, there are plenty of Amiga RPi cases on ebay. Some even come with preloaded "licensed" kickstart and what not. You can get one, slap Amiberry on it and you have a AmigaMini - for yourself. You will never be able to sell it to the mass market though, becasue of the legal cluster***k and a zilliard problems appearing when trying to manufacture one with working keyboard. |

There are umpteen casual players of Amiga games. Just join any given retro games facebook group and theres always someone asking how do I run these games. Problem with Amiga some times is if you don't know everything already your looked down upon (that's just the vibe I get from certain groups, not this one!).
As for the mini Amiga 500... how much are you going to have to pay Amigakit to use that name, how much are you going to have to pay for the kickstart, what about those that now own the case design, or however is taking ownership of the OS this week. The IP is spread way to thin over 2 many houses and that's why we don't have a mini. It would be a great idea though and would sell bucket loads in Europe, certainly in the UK anyway. It would have to be idiot proof so just a front end to load games, maybe an option to run ADFs but that's it. To the person above how said they are going to try and make something with a Pi, I say good luck but make sure to get all your ducks in a row before you end up in court. |

And being Amiga hardware, it'll never be produced in large quantities. At current rates, that's just shy of $900 Canadian, and this is all before taxes, S&H, etc. I expect that if I buy one, the total cost will run me at least a nice grand before I have it in my home. |
