Workbench: An Easy Question / Poser / Query =)

Hello there my fellow forum chummies

I have a question for you -

I have a 40GB HDD Partitioned (to way to many places) each being 4GB (just under)

now, I would like access to them (hence mounted) BUT i dont want to see them all on workbench

all I want is

AmigaOS:
DH1
DH2
DH3

The rest I want hidden, if that possible, how would I go about doing that ?

I seem to recall something with Env-handler (or something else like it) that lets you mount a volume with no icon. I think the function is called AddVolNode, something like that. The result is no Env volume on WB, but it is still active in the system - you have to go through the CLI to see what's in there.

In OS 3.9 there is Prefs/Workbench where you can select drives to be invisible.

Or you could mark the other partitions as automount=no, but then you wouldn't be able to access them at all.

The big question is: why did you make so many partitions ? Without the software patches you can only access the first one anyway. If you don't use the patches, the other partitions will corrupt the first one sooner or later. And IF you use the patches, you can make bigger partitions. Only the first one which loads the patches needs to be inside the first 4GB of the drive.

@meega

cheers I shall look into that!

@thomas,

Alas its OS3.0 Classic Workbench (ECS)

its a setup for a 68000 amiga, with 8mb fast, 2mb chip, I like a few creature comforts.

I want to make a small (500mb) non-booting (hidden) partion (say hdx for backup, and from the simple execution of a script will copy all back the primary HD0:

I can achieve all that bar the hidden thingy =)

There is a program on aminet that let's you do that under wb < 3.9.

It's called nloadwb and you can find it here: http://aminet.net/search?query=nloadwb

NP.

In case Newloadwb doesn't work:

Just insert the following in your startup-sequence (before loadwb):

"assign <volume-label>: dismount"

For example if you want to hide the Work-partition:

"assign Work: dismount"

That way, the volume-icon won't be shown under WB, but it is accessible under a CLI by it's device-name (DHx

If you want to access the hidden volume by it's volume-label from CLI (for example "list Work:" , just
do an "assign <volume-label> DHx:" right after the assign dismount command.

edited some things to be more clear.

i once tried mounting a hidden partition using a mountlist but never got very far.
Actually gave up after having found out i needed way more information in the mountlist than i was willing to look up.
But it should in theory be possible to mount a non-automount partition using C:Mount and a mountlist in SYS:Storage/DOSDrivers/
