White screen at Amiga 500 power on?

Hello,

I just set up my amiga 500 that has been sitting in it's original box, waiting for this triumphant return. Now that I was about to power it up all I get is a white screen on the monitor (It just renders a black screen if I turn off the power on the power adapter) and none of the two LEDs on the amiga itself are litting up.

Any help would be appreciated, I hope my beloved amiga isn't broken? It worked the last time I tried it, some 10 years ago.

hmmm this sounds like what happened to me a few years back when I started up my original A500 with 1.2 kick.......my problem was solved when I did a few things as follows:
1- removed A501 512Kb expansion card
2- opened up case and reset kick rom chip

also I would check if your PSU is kicking out the right voltage by checking with your multimeter

hope this works as I know how you feel when your original miggy goes funny

Hello again, and thanks for the replys!

Ok, I removed the M501-s RAM & Clock expansion, and now I get an all black screen and a slight humming sound from the amiga but nothing more. The expension card however, did not look too well on the underside. http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/6368/img0470um5.jpg

Regarding the caps lock key, Yes. When I turn the power on it lights up for a second! I can also press it a few times so that the LED turns off/on.

hmmm looks like you got some moisture problems in your amiga...perhaps it was stored in a damp environment?...anyhow your next step is to take off the cover and metal shield, clean/blow off any dirt/dust on mb and re-seat all socketed IC's..while ur there check all connections to the mb...ie. power, keyboard, floppy etc....

be patient and good luck

Now I have opened the beast, and it looks as if it is in better shape than the expansion card. Now, I just wanted to ask what type of tools would be preferred to remove the ICs from the mainboard, I tried doing it by hand but I was worried that I would break them.

I'd personally use a flat-head screwdriver and just be very careful. If you want to remove Agnus you'd need a PLCC chip puller really.

ok the mb looks quite good..i see you got a rev 5 mb..mines a 6a..before pulling out the ic's make sure they are all properly seated by firmly pressing down on them (on both sides & the middle)...try booting system...if this doesnt work then try taking them out and re-installing them..use an IC puller or a very small screwdriver (start at opposite ends of the chip slighyly lifting the ic them moving onto the other side always being careful not to scratch the mb)...once done boot upo system and pray

Now I have re-seated all my ICs on the board, and cleaned them from oxidation. I've also made sure that I put them all back in the correct place / direction. The only IC I didn't remove because of lack of tools, was the Fat Agnus one. There was quite alot of oxidation on the other ICs tho:

When I now try to boot it up I get a very quick flash of the green power LED and a normal second long green light from the caps lock key. I've noticed that I can press the caps lock key so that it goes black / green for exactly six times. After that it wont light up anymore.

Now it's all black, the power LED lit up green once tho. When I tried restarting it it didn't come on again. I've also removed and carefully cleaned the Fat Agnus chipset. I'm starting to run out of ideas, all the capacitors look ok, the mainboard looks alright. It's a bit frustrating that the power LED only worked one time.

Now I'm getting all kinds of colors when I power it on, ranging from blue, to red to teal, also some times I get a jitter of colors that then turn into a solid one. Is this good or bad? At least it's kind of alive

I'd suggest trying another power supply, or testing your current one with a multimeter.

Ok, I have now tested with another power supply so I know I've got a working one. I found that if you press on the processor the power LED goes on and flashes. 5 short then one long and then it repeats that over and over. When I release my finger from the processor the power LED goes into just green (not flashing)
