Tips on cleaning up A500 RF Shields...

RF shields in old Amiga 500's start to rust or dull over time. Anyone got some ideas on how to clean them up without resorting to drastic measure or getting too nasty with wet n dry sandpaper? Or will I have to spray or coat the surface afterwards?

Reduction vs dissolution of iron oxides (rust)

You can reduce the oxides back into a metal with Silver Polish. It contains sulfer compounds for this purpose. Acids will dissolve the rust, removing the metal.

Your best result would be with silver polish and a buffer (Dremel has one), but to prevent future oxidation you need to prevent oxygen and moisture from reaching the metal; oil provides a temporary solution, but polyurethane coating is more permanent.

Classic coke + tin foil, but that eats the metal as said before. :-)

I'd probably just 'chuck-it' also, but you could buy some rust eater, sandpaper and some brush-able paint.

You'll be looking something under £10 for the above items.

I used to just rip and chuck them myself! but that was back in the old days.

The thing is now I want to keep/make a decent a500 with all the original bits where possible.

Im already happy to find I have a rev6 board, just have to confirm if is dead or not (hoping its alive) as I havent even fired it up yet.
