Galaga '92 - One gripe...

Heya guys,

Loved this game back in the day and still play it every now and then

Galaga '92

I have one major grip with it though... the tokens / power-ups.

These are sooooo hard to read being a grey spinning coin with white text.

I often get stung by picking up the "X" i.e. "Sucker" that removes all your current power-ups

I wonder if some talented coder could change the text on the coin to another colour instead of white?

This was relatively simple, a red x is definitely more readable.
But with funny side effect

Technicality: circled x uses COLOR01 which is obviously shared with other elements.
Also being a 5 planes screen if I had been the coder I would have used an optimized blitting for objects so simple and with few colors like the descent coins.
This implies that it would be easier to change the shape for the more colorful objects (like the ship) that contain the shared color .. a not immediate or fast job...
But they are only assumptions (not checked the bob renderer), the real reason is another.
I'm too scared by this message contained in the main executable:
- rippers will be skinned !! -

Enjoy this 'corrupted' version!

EDIT: removed, work in progress

Hi ross,

Thanks for doing this

...but yeah, too many other things are affected by this change:
  • Ship colour.
  • Bullets; yours and enemies.
  • Tractor beam.

Oh well, and I'd just finished making a new disk with your hack... guess I should have tested first

I've played a bit and is better than before, but yeah, totally fuc*ed.

A new tag [f ross]

EDIT: actually what I dislike more is the ship.
Bullets and tractor beam are passable.

EDIT2: we have to find only someone who wants to be skinned and redo the ship

I can't see any volunteers coming forward with that criteria

The coins are 16x11x4 ACBM. Only 3 planes have set bits in the drab coins so only gray scale 0-7 is available. Firepower and Sucker are ripped, painted with PPaint, saved RAW fmt. Finally coins are loaded back into memory using VASM. FP=Green Suck=Blue (3 faces each). Unfortunately the game looks encrypted so it's not just a simple data substitution.

Ross' crack might just work. I see gfx in the exe now. Sucker dismembered into 4 planes. Maybe rip the coins and let DamienD repaint first?

Well, for a complete job all the coins should have symbols of different colors

EDIT: also the tractor beam with that red shade wasn't bad.

But Damien for the choice.

Appreciate all the effort guys

...just changing the text colour only in the "coins / power ups" from white to something more readable would be ace if possible?

If it's too much work, please don't bother / waste your time.

OK. Here's the game Ross sent me. All extra paint is red now. Did anyone notice that funnel ray is not shown during demonstration?

Oh man; that is absolutely friggin' perfect!!!

...looks like I really need to update the disk in my collection yet again tomorrow (when sober); to include this great hack

No big deal really; that's the easy part... thank you sooooo much guys!!!

...my old eyes found it extremely hard to identify the white text on grey coins / power-ups

Not anymore!!!

Added bonus; nobody got skinned in the process; sorry ransom1122... you can now unsubscribe from the thread

Just discovered using HOL "aliensgohome" trainer and quitting via LMB the game goes guru. EAB server disk - Galaga92[V1.4].zip does not behave that way. Better let Ross have a look first if that is important.
