Benchmarks/Killer Apps

What would consider to be the Amigas shining stars? What are the killer apps in your eyes in the following categories of games.

ECS:
AGA:
RTG:

Around the last days I was active in the Amiga scene 'Napalm' was being hyped in the magazines as the next great RTS game. After I installed it and played it I was not happy it took space on my hard drive.

Naplam was great fun, if a little hard!

T-zero also by clickboom I feel gets over looked for an great original Amiga game.

AGA from a technical point of view kinda blown away to see that quake2 could run on aga chipset. https://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=68414

Amiga original title and best aga game for graphics and gameplay I would have to say slam tilt, yes it’s only a pinball game, but still one the best I’ve played.

For rtg and Amiga original, its most likely payback.

Ecs I’m not really aware of any particular title that was designed just for that chip or had a big enough improvement over ocs worthy of a mention.

For Amiga specific stuff, Flink, Roadkill and Banshee are good examples of AGA-only games.

I don't really know of any games that use ECS that don't run on OCS. Settlers I think uses EHB, which is missing from some old OCS chipsets, and Productivity modes for Workbench and applications I guess is a reason for ECS over OCS. But to showcase OCS/ECS, games like Shadow of the Beast and Agony are frequently shown as excellent examples of what can be done.

And I'm gonna say Payback for RTG too, which also included an excellent CD audio soundtrack. RTS games like Napalm and Exodus: The Last War are in there too, and are massively improved by RTG.

OCS/ECS: Lionheart & Ambermoon

Last edited by Torti-the-Smurf; 08 March 2021 at 14:38. Reason: adding Ambermoon, if in mood for THE RPG on Classic 16-Bit Amiga ;)

For me "killer apps" always meant must-have games/soft which can make people to choose a particular platform over the others. In that sesne I can't think of anything for ECS/AGA/RTG which would qualify.

OCS had quite a a lot of them though, starting with Defender Of The Crown, then the likes of Sensi, Cannon Fodder, SotB, Another World, Settlers and many others.

Killer apps is indeed a pretty vague term, particularly when mixed with benchmarking, but since the post was also looking for "shining stars", I guess it's looking for good representative examples from each category, particularly if they're Amiga exclusive.

To be fair, most of these games were also released across lots of other platforms, so they don't really make a compelling case for owning an Amiga specifically.

They were either released on Amiga first, or were the best versions (or both), so I'd say they make a strong case. Otherwise, what else is there? I doubt anybody would buy an Amiga specifically to play Zeewolf or Benefactor

In general, there weren't many strict exclusives in the microcomputer world, anythying decent was pretty much ported to other platforms.

True, it just seems a funny rule to invoke for those particular games, where there's not a huge amount to separate them from their ports either in graphics (SotB perhaps being the exception there) or exclusivity as the ports followed pretty quickly on other platforms. But I guess the whole concept of killer apps is pretty subjective.

Napalm is one of the best games for Amiga ever! But you really need a RTG card (ZorroIII or faster) and 060 (or faster) to be able to play it in its full glory (and full resolution).

It's especially fun in a serial link-up with two players. Me and my friend had maany overnight sessions in it back in the day. I probably haven't spend as much time on any game... It was just perfect balance on it in two player games. Beer, snacks, and Napalm FTW!

maybe the real killer App is ImageFX, the only software Amiga exclusive. Games are good, but you find similar and better also on other platforms.
