Beneath a steel sky

Hi folks,
I now work in game development and want to introduce my students to story telling games and cool narratives from the miggy era. I have an old 1200 to take into work [i dont want to take my accelerated and beloved shiny 1200 into work ] and would love to run Beneath a Steel Sky for students to play through and analyse over the next few weeks.
I know its now freeware but where is the best place to pick up adfs that I can burn to disk and take in to work. I want them to have to play from disk to get an idea of what it used to entail to play these games back in the day

also will it work from disk on a 1200?

this is not a very good idea. why ? bass is a 15 disk game. I don't know how many copies you're thinking to make, but it'll cost a small fortune if you try to burn a copy for each student. You may have not noticed, but a 'working' DD floppy is not something easy to come by these days.

will it work from the floppies ? I haven't tried, so I can't say, but it should.

where to get it ? had no idea, but after a google search, (which I'm sure you're capable of too) leads me to the official page,

which contains the freeware floppy version, which is probably the best version to get.

I've got the ADF's, if its allowed I will upload them to the zone for you.

I tried them with winuae as an A1200 3.1 rom and the game seems to load ok, I can try on my real A1200 if you like?

UPDATE: I tried in my real A1200 (030 with 3.1 roms) with the first disk that I copied from the ADF and the intro runs through fine & asks for the next disk, but didn't burn anymore of the disks so...! Also in workbench there is a HD install option.

I was planning on only doing one copy of the disks [i have plenty of disks, about 300 infact, they are not dd but standard ones and they seem to work fine] the group will also be playing C64 games and boardgames as the workshop is about analysing how games can tell stories. My argument is that the high point of narrative gaming was the miggy era when we had loads of innovation in gaming rather that concetrating on technological innovation and so called graphical realism.
also have 4 external diskdrives to use.

Playing this game from floppy is a nightmare - there is SO MUCH disk swapping involved.
Install it.

The original install script is a nightmare, takes ages. The WHDLoad patch is best way to install/play it.

I put them in the zone for you as I am off out now and wont be back till next year!

Hope that was ok? They are rar'd in 2 parts because of the 6mb limit.

Install the game on pcmcia/cf and use the CD32 version with speach

ffs, please - as Retro-nerd says- give them the WHDload version to use from within WinUAE.

hell, if they have the patience to sit through the preload, they can even have the luxury to give them the speech from the CD32 version

Why hasnt anyone mentioned "ScummVM" yet? You can throw it on any PC knocking around (or iphone, psp, gaming device!)... and I think it even has Amiga versions for them games too! - BASS is up for FREE DOWNLOAD on the ScummVM website! ;-)

I would however recommend getting "It Came From the Desert" for the Amiga... now THAT WAS STORYTELLING!

A couple of good games for story without much narrative would be Flashback and Another World, but I can see why you are using an adventure game, just make sure you have a walkthrough handy or otherwise your students may get stuck at one place for too long and forget the story entirely.

Well, at least an Amiga Dos installed hdd version. This is authentic enough. I doubt that many Amiga user played BASS directly from plain disks.

I did since I had no hard drive. It is just not the same if you are not swapping disks every 34 seconds.

"Secret of Monkey Island 2" should work fine then, many disks too.... and there was always that dodgy copy of "It Came from the Desert" that had a read error bug on disk 2

The CD32 iso should be used then. That's how i played it. Playing from 15 disks was unbareable.

Hmm i wouldn't personally go with the speech version myself as the delivery of most of it's lines takes the shine off an otherwise fine adventure

I watched a friend play the floppy version of this on my A1200 with 2 drives and i'm glad i get to play this now rather than then - 15 disks nightmare but some of us had no choice

i think i will also give them the option of playing It Came from the desert and wings. Both were really cool story driven games that borrowed heavily from film/cinema techniques. ICFTD actually creeped me out back in the day, it will be interesting to see what the playstation and console generation of gamers think of it.

ICFTD is a great choice. Good story and a real mixture in gameplay.

I've always been surprised more games werent made in a similar style

just a thought but will workbench lite and cf card and whdload work on my old unexpanded 1200? I would actually like to take in the cf card as an option in case of disk death.
