I think the 1208 is just a RAM card and will not only block the use of the PCMCIA port but offer only a small speed increase.

It has about 119mb less available Ram

The ACA Card has 1mb which can be used for Maprom, this means if you want you can copy the on-board Rom to Ram, this speeds up operations and also you can even use your own custom Rom, for example if your Amiga only has 3.0 Rom you can Map 3.1 to Maprom instead of replacing the physical chip.

The only thing the ACA can't do that the 1208 can is there is no option to add an FPU, however this is not needed for the majority of software and if you probably don't and never will need it.

There is one small point to mention, the ACA cards can introduce timing issues on some Motherboards, they are best used on a well serviced board (i.e with new Capacitors) and a good reliable PSU such as a converted ATX. In the event you have timing issues these can be fixed by your reseller such as Amigakit.

Second note as above, the 1208 will Map it's Rom in the ZorroII space so you wont be able to use the PCMCIA port when using 8mb, it is fine if you allocate just 4mb by jumper or swap the Simm. The ACA does not have this issue.

Is it really worth investing in the ACA card then? Will many whdload games run without a card?

Many WHDLoad slaves require Fast RAM. I wouldn't waste my time using an Amiga that didn't have it.

It was always the way to go to upgrade your Amiga with an accelrator card + memory and a HD (except floppy only Amigas that got a memory only expansion). There is only one reason to use a stock Amiga: You really have to know what your are doing or want to do.

I got the ACA 1232/33 and it is AWESOME. If you can, I would HIGHLY recommend it.

As has been said you need some extra Ram to get the most out of your A1200, it will be great with just the 1208 but for the price you might end up paying you could just as soon buy an ACA.

There's a nice buyers guide over at Amibay and some cheaper expansions come up around the 50 mark if you want to save a little. I know on eBay the 1208's are usually much more expensive.
