How to read sidecar scsi-hdd with amiga partitions?
Hello,
In 1991 my harddrive in my sidecar died. It was a 83 MB Seagate HDD which was formerly installed in a sidecar with a bootable DOS-Partition and 3 amiga partitions. I was able now to reconstruct the HDD. Is there a possibility to read the amiga partitions without setting up the amiga with the sidecar? Does anyone have any information about the structure of the MBR and how the amiga-partitions a set-up (adisk.com)? Any help would be appreciated. |

im assuming you are talking about an a590,then you will have to replace the drive.
and just reinstall the software. the size of the drive is dependant on the rom revision in the 590. |

He's probably talking about the A1060 sidecar. Probably the only side expansion that officially had sidecar in its name..

Sorry,
I was not aware of that there is other hardware called sidecar. I was speaking about a A1000 with a A1060 with SCSI-Card and Seagate Harddisk ST1096N. 'The drive was partitioned with adisk.com a pc tool with was delivered with the A1060. My question was about the partition structure produced by this tool. Is it accesible by a pc with scsi card (this would asume pc style partitions). It can't be a "normal" amiga hdd-setting, because there is a pc-partition in the beginning of the harddrive. I found some info about the flexibility of FFS to move the rdbapart from its "normal" position, where in my case the MBR of the pc-partition can be found. Is uae able to recognize this? I found a hint, that the checksum of the RDB will be destroyed if you connect a amiga harddrive to a pc with windows. So do you have any information about how ADISK.COM manages the partitioning of the harddrive? I d'ont want to risk loosing my data. |

Mbr and rdb and partitions for both can coexist on one drive. Just have to take care that you don't overlap any partitions
With a scsi card in your pc, windows can only read the fat partition but winuae will see the amiga partitions. (once you add the harddrive in winuae) |

Thanks for the info. I'll try that ... (I'll get the reonstructed drive next week and will then report about the result). |

It may be RDB inside a PC partition. Just plug it into a Linux PC and make a full dump of the drive with dd.
Then make a backup copy of the dump and start investigating with a good hex editor. |

Hi Jope,
That sounds very good. I already had similiar plans. As soon as I'm done, I will report (I think by the end of the next week). |
