8bit Atari emulators (winXP/AmigaOS)

Growing up my girlfriend had an Atari XE/XL (poor thing) and has very fond memories of it. I showed her a video of some the Atari classics and she remembered most of them and insisted we play Archon (one of her favorites). And so we did We had a great time (who'd knew) but I was wondering what are the best 8bit Atari emulators out there. I'm using Atari800Win which gets the job done but maybe there are better alternatives. Any decent ones for the Amiga?

And yes she'll be getting an Amiga games primer very soon

I second that... Atari800win is probably the best emulator....

There's also Atari800, which is an open source alternative which runs pretty good as well... The great thing about this one is that there's an amiga version available as well, iirc. Try sourceforge.net to search for that one...

MESS is another one, but not as good as the two mentioned above.

EDIT:
On a sidenote, was (and is) the Atari 400/800 popular in Poland? I do remember an awesome demo made for the 800XL back in 2001 which was made in Poland. It pushes the little machine to its limits..... I'll see if I can find it back on pouet.net

AND EDIT:
Found:
http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=9044

or the video if no emulator is at hand:

Thanks guys! It seems I'll be sticking with Atari800Win.

Any 2-player games we must try?

Yeah it was pretty popular. My good friend had one and I remember some of the games were great. Most of the people I knew back then had C64s or Amigas and those with Ataris or PCs were treated like lepers

Can't really comment on the scene stuff. There's still a pretty active C64 scene out here. Probably the same goes for the 8bit Atari. There are some brilliant, Polish sites with games and software like atarionline.pl

hehe, I know what you mean about owning an Atari not being the hippest thing

A site which might be of interest is www.atarimania.com for more info on games....

As for two player games, I have no clue. At the time, I was stuck in the attic with just my Atari and one joystick....

I did like Ninja (codemasters) and Red max (also codemasters)

Archer MacLean's games are pretty good on the XL. Try International Karate or Dropzone. Also the Lucasfilm games were ace, better than the C64 counterparts.

There have been fairly recent ports of Atari800 to Amiga OS 4, MorphOS and WarpOS. The last 68k Amiga port was included on Aminet 38 CD-ROM, and a much earlier port was included on AFCD 29.

Zybex's great. Played it yesterday

Will give Atari800 a try. There was an emulators round up in AF 92. Still have it at my old place. AMR doesn't feature those pages though

The 800 had quite a few awesome games. Especially:

Any of the Lucasfilm fractal games (Rescue on Fractalus, The Eidolon, Koronis Rift), Dropzone, Attack of the Mutant Camels, Crownland, Rainbow Walker, Archon, The Alternate Reality series, Capture the Flag, Fort Apocalypse, and possibly several others which I forgot to mention.

Are you using Atari800win or Atari800win Plus? I actually prefer Atari800win Plus. For a good introduction to Atari800Win plus look here. The only two systems I reminisce about is the Atari 800 and the Amiga 500, man those were the days. I still use my 3000 to as a terminal to my home FreeBSD server daily. That way I can still play a few games while I work.

My faves are Cavern's of Mars, Stellar Shuttle, Frogger, Crossfire, Hard Hat Willy, Fort Apocalypse, Star Raiders, Preppie. And loads more!

Check out this rather spiffy looking Space Harrier remake for it too!

Not for 2 players, but you must check Draconus (well, you have probably checked it already )

Also, the POKEY chip has had some amazing music written for it. The ASMA archive has (almost) all POKEY chiptunes in a giant .zip, similar to the HVSC. I recommend the stuff by Grayscale.

Altirra is the best Atari 8-bit emulator for Windows:
http://www.virtualdub.org/beta/Altirra-1.5-test6.zip

It features: full cassette player emulation (real-time loading, loading noises (CAS/WAV), can load protected tapes (WAV), Turbo loaders), TV artifacting, image filtering, exceptional compatibility & emulation fidelity.

Atari800WinPLus developement halted about 4,5 years ago, it has nice GUI but lacks everything else and it's not even compatible with Windows 7.
