Ah understood. As i've registered and logged in just to vote on a rush, didn't read the proper headings.

Nonetheless I think it's really highly remarked to be in that slot! That proves the quality of the game.

BTW I've downloaded the demo for AROS and will give it a go later tonight!

Not really your fault: it's not written anywhere what that ranking is relative to and how it works. As the maintainer of the BOH page, I realized it is based on the daily accesses only thanks to the fact that whenever I release an update the position improves (on the other hand, during the periods of silence, the position sinks down).

Well, I must admit that currently the position must have improved (and it keeps on improving) because I've been asking around to vote - i.e. more people visited the page
Just for the record, the highest BOH got was 12th, when it got featured in an official Indie DB video (it made it to the video thanks to the 13th update).

Thanks, I hope you'll have fun! (But don't expect it to be a walk in the park )

BOH passed the first round!

Hello Amigans,

it's also thanks to your support that I can happily report that BOH passed the first round of the Indie of the Year Awards!

Now, if you wish to help BOH make it to the finals, just:
1. go here;
2. click on the "Adventure" category in the "TOP 100 RELEASED INDIES OF 2010" list;
3. locate BOH's line (it should be the third);
4. click on "VOTE".
(And, if you can, spread the word!)
It's easy and, like before, no registration is required!

Thanks once again!

P.S. I'm seizing the chance to inform you that I've recently released a 20-minute game session video - if you'd like to give it a look, go here.

update14 released

Hello Amigans,

of course, you wouldn't expect me to let the year end without giving BOH players one freebie, would you? The 14th update is now out! It ups the total number of missions to a whopping 50 (for many tens of hours of play), brings a few enhancements and makes life easier to who enjoys creating his own missions!

More specifically, this update:
* reworks the advanced automapper (the realistic mode has been replaced with the fullscreen view, which allows to see more; the controls have been made more comfortable);
* improves the video modes suggestions;
* allows terminating map lines with CR+LF;
* improves error logging;
* improves the graphics of blocks in theme "C64";
* adds 5 new missions;
* retouches slightly a few missions;
* retouches slightly the Spanish translation;
* updates the manuals;
* applies various other changes.

The update can be downloaded for free from the DOWNLOADS page of the official website.
The demos have been updated to reflect the changes.

Enjoy!

The Christmas SurpriCe

Hi all,

I'd like to let you know that the update released a few days ago was not the only surprise in store for Christmas

Starting today, BOH comes at ridiculously low price!
In fact, who fancies the idea of receiving a nice boxed copy of BOH comfortably at home, only needs EUR 8.99, for Italy, or EUR 14.99, for any other place in the world! - and that's including taxes and shipping!
And, of course, there's a surprise also for who is perfectly happy with a digital copy: downloading the full game costs only EUR 4.99!
You'll never ever get so much for so little, so, if you're looking forward to lots of gaming fun during the upcoming holidays, don't let this extraordinary opportunity pass you by!

(Please note that this offer supercedes any previous offer and pricing scheme.)

Cheers!

update15 released

Hi all,

I'm extremely happy to celebrate BOH's 3rd birthday by informing you that I have just released the 15th and final update, which brings even more contents and improvements!

More specifically, this update:
* adds 5 missions;
* adds the Dutch translation;
* optimizes even further the rendering engine;
* replaces the transition effect with a cooler one;
* centers the graphics vertically when playing in a screen bigger than the game area;
* allows providing just alphamask files for all the graphics of themes;
* replaces icons with bigger and crisper ones;
* allows to configure the URL for the submissions of records to the online world standings (so that, in future, standings will remain accessible also if the URL changes);
* updates the manuals;
* applies various other minor optimizations/fixes.

The update can be downloaded for free from the DOWNLOADS page of the official website at www.bohthegame.com.
The demos have been updated to reflect the changes.

Soundtrack released (for free)

Hi all,

I'd like to let you know that, thanks to the warm and positive feedback received, today I have released the BOH soundtrack, in a deluxe package prepared with the same meticulous care that characterizes BOH throughout.

The package contains:
  • 18 tracks (6 menu tunes, 6 failure jingles and 6 success jingles, for a total of over 11 minutes) in CD quality;
  • a print-quality, jewel case-format, 8-page booklet which accompanies the reader on an aural journey through the mazes of BOH;
  • a print-quality, jewel case-format, double-sided inlay;
  • a color serigraphy for high-quality CD stickers and pressed CD labels;
  • a black-and-white serigraphy for LightScribe labels.

Everybody can download the soundtrack for free from http://www.bohthegame.com/downloads.html.

(Note: the picture is only a mockup of how a real CD would look like.)

BOH 5th Anniversary Edition released

Hi everybody,

yesterday it was the 5th anniversary of BOH and I could not find a better way to celebrate the event than releasing a brand-new edition that majestically closes the incredible evolution the game underwent since its original release.

The 5th Anniversary Edition:
* includes all the updates released previously;
* reworks the video modes handling (full screen by default; window on 16-bit screens allowed; more robust; etc.);
* adds the CRT and LCD pixel modes;
* adds the 5x zoom;
* adds 5 new missions, bringing the total to a massive 60;
* assigns the pause to the [ESCAPE] key (instead of a specific key), which thus no longer causes the immediate abort of the current mission;
* reworks the menu controls (more keys; do not depend anymore on the in-game controls configuration);
* adds the emergency configuration reset (assigned to the key [F12]);
* adds the screenshot functionality (assigned to the key [F1]);
* makes quitting by means of [ALT]+[F4] available on all platforms;
* sets the default URL for records submission to http://www.retream.com/BOH (it is no longer necessary to specify such URL manually in the configuration file);
* replaces the copy code with an email address for the records submission;
* updates the manuals;
* applies many other optimizations/changes/fixes, for more performance, polish and robustness.

It comes on a new CD image that contains:
* the AmigaOS, AROS, Linux, MacOS and Windows versions;
* universal installers that can install the game from scratch or update any previous version;
* the soundtrack (CD-quality audio files and print-quality jewel case materials).

It is now available also from IndieGameStand*, besides Desura*, Gameolith* and, of course, the official website.
Users can download it for free from http://www.retream.com/BOH/download.php?ID=code (where "code" is the personal copy code).
The demos have been updated to reflect the changes.

*Please note that it might take a few days before the updated version appears on these shops.

BOH ADVANCE released

So much time has passed since the last update that you might have thought that I was finally done... well, nope, there was still one last big chapter to write!

Today I have released the 18th free update, a massive update that closes the game's almost 11 years long development life, brings new features, new missions (for a total of 100!), and countless other improvements, and earns the game the ADVANCE tag.

BOH ADVANCE can be purchased from https://retream.itch.io/boh. The current owners of a copy can download the updated version for free from the same address (who does not have an itch.io key can get one from https://www.retream.com/BOH/get_key.php?code=<CODE>, where <CODE> is the personal copy code).
The update is performed by installing the new version over the old one using the supplied installer.

Enjoy!

This update:
* adds 23 new missions:
* most of them are very easy to average;
* many of them are based on unusual and different design/logic;
* some of them make use of the new features introduced by this update;
* some of them are multi-phase and multi-mission;
* fixes/improves pre-existing missions (also making use of the new features);
* increases the chances of finding a recharge in explosive objects from 25% to 33%;
* adds levels labels;
* adds the disabling of message points;
* avoids the teleporting of the EM to the same square of the RM or a square too close to it, even when the RM is on a square which does not have walkable squares around (this avoids multiple consecutive collisions that quickly drain the shield);
* avoids that damage is done to the shield while an enemy is hit (this, in practice, fixes for good the repeated EM-RM collisions issue that, in rare cases, might have caused an almost instant death);
* makes the auto-orientation of connected staircases choose the best orientation context-wise and RM-wise;
* adds a rendered-on-the-fly background to mission information and pause screens;
* excludes the video modes with dimensions bigger than the desktop's;
* replaces the stars with thumbs-up icons for resolutions;
* allows the handling of special events/keys while displaying a notice;
* removes the joypad analogue axis support;
* reworks controls reconfiguration:
* adds an end notification;
* changes the joypad actions;
* removes the aborting by means of [ESCAPE];
* removes the overlapping of button and keys flags;
* makes other changes;
* improves the themes settings:
* reworks the configuration handling;
* adds [F2] for quick switching;
* improved the themes:
* touches up the wallpapers of the themes "Sci-Fi" and "Underground";
* fixes/improves the rotating lamp graphics in the themes "C64" and "Sci-Fi";
* optimizes/improves:
* the handling of levels lighting;
* the allocation and referencing of enemies objects;
* the EM spawning and AI;
* the universal function for the interpolated rotation of BGRA graphics;
* the tiles handling module;
* the controls handling;
* the screenshot grabbing;
* the SDL initialization;
* some code bits here and there;
* replaces Mix_Volume() with Mix_Pause() + Mix_Resume() to (un)pause sounds when the game gets (un)paused (this hopefully fixes the occasional sounds corruption on Windows);
* fixes the picking up of the aiming device (the check was broken, so it was possible to pick it up multiple times);
* fixes the printing of the levels number (the last digit of levels (-)100-109 was not printed);
* fixes the loop counters usage in m_CreateMap() to allow more than 65535 permanent animations;
* fixes the disappearing of information in the menu when an alphanumeric key was pressed (the handler returned an action insted of doing nothing);
* fixes the error message and the log file name reported by records submission;
* fixes the work path on Windows (%TMP% was statically expanded at compile time);
* adapts the code to the latest version of the custom framework the game is built on;
* improves the icons:
* adds more icons;
* touches up graphics;
* adds the icon size choice to the AmigaOS and AROS installers;
* fixes the MacOs and Windows icons sizes;
* fixes/improves/updates both the user's and the developer's manual;
* reworks/updates the artwork;
* fixed/improves the installers;
* brings other minor changes/improvements/optimizations.
