A keymap is a keyboard layout for foreign languages. Like for example the german keyboard has a different layout and a keymap 'maps' the keys to the right characters for the programs.

Nope. My Amiga 500 has the 'ä', 'ö' and 'ü' keys and the other german special keys So I need a keymap to use them.

I always found keymaps as one of the coolest features of the AmigaOS.
With a bit of work, editing the fonts + the keymaps you could do wonders with it.
I personally "polonized" my A600, did some bootup menus on some floppies that automatically loaded a proggie or a game when you pressed the F keys for example.
Awesome. It's one of those things that were cool, easy, fun and practical.

So you really got your keys to perform a polonaise?
Just kidding, but mapping the F keys with a keymap is a great idea (that must be the reason why I never used it... )

Yes, keymaps are great for foreign languages. If you, for example, want a fully Japanese Amiga experiance, like this:

then a Japanese keyboard with keymap would be essential. Note that this is not my Workbench, though
