Winuae virtual keyboard?

Hi,

I have built my own "retro-heaven-cabinet" with gamebase 64, gamebase amiga and latest mame I'm going to builld a full "arcade-like" control board and I just noticed that there are problems with certain games especially with amiga, that need keyboard to for example enter the player's name I really dont want to spoil my arcade cabinet with a lame keyboard, so is there any possibility to use somekind of virtual keyboard with Winuae? I know in the xbox version it works like a charm

Well Windows XP has an On-Screen Keyboard (I think Win2000 also has it) in Start > All Programs > Accessories > Accessibility but you will need to run WinUAE in Windowed mode and require a mouse. If you were able to have a virtual keyboard in fullscreen it may get in the way.

Another idea would be to add a feature to WinUAE so you can use your joystick/pad to scroll though all the letters.

E.g. Press a fire button (which game doesn’t use) to bring up a letter bar across bottom of screen, scroll left or right to select letters and press up to input letter and down to backspace. Press fire again to exit.

I have to agree with emuola, the xbox on screen keyboard is superb, it really does make playing games from the armchair that much easier.

If it was included in WinUAE I'd be very happy!

I think this thread deserves to be in req.UAE Wishlist forum.

@killergorilla/emuola how does OSK work in xbox UAE? Via mouse or joy?

You can "awake" the keyboard by pressing thumb on the controller and then navigate the keys "normally" with the d-pad. You can exit the OSK and return to the game by pressing thumb again. That's really convenient, I can't think of any better solution. Something like this would really make Winuae even better

I don't have any plans for onscreen keyboard or any onscreen GUI system. At least not yet.

Who needs his name in the highscore ? Just configure one button of your controlpanel as Return. You won't be able to enter a name, but you can continue playing. That's how I solved the problem.
I have around 30 amiga games on my cabinet, each with it's own config file for optimal performance. 20 of them have indiviual keyboard settings, so I don't require a real keyboard. I suggest you do the same.
