i managed to record a gameplay using full frames (uncompressed).
this seems to be the one and only way i can record video in winuae.
now my problem is: tons of output parts, 2gb each, 76gb in total.
so how do i put them together so that i can upload them to youtube?
and how do i compress it? because upload of 76gb would take years.

76 GB? You should consider using a better CODEC

I use and recommend VirtualDub (VD), which is not updated anymore but still a very good freeware program. If you have named your files with numbers at the end (part001.avi, part002.avi...) you can automatically put them together into one file.

Open first file and append the next and ALL files should be appended automatically. You can also edit your videos, center and crop your videos in VD if needed.

my problem with codecs, there are following codecs available:
-microsoft video 1: recording not possible. total freeze when avi output enabled
-intel iyuv codec (is available two times in this dropdown list): recording works, but huge size, similar to full frames
-cinepak codec from radius: recording not possible. while avi output enabled emulation is slow as hell, unplayable
-xvid mpeg-4 codec: recording not possible. total freeze when avi output enabled
-divx 6.9.2 codec (4 logical cpus): only available occasionally, when available:
error message says: "AVIStreamSetFormat() FAILED (80044066)"
although avi output still enabled and sound output disabled, no recording.
-and at last: full frames (uncompressed)
these are my options...

//edit: until some point in 2015 recording using xvid codec worked just fine.
but from some day on not anymore.

If you've read this whole thread, you'll see that there are at least TWO much better options available for WinUAE AVI recording.

i forgot to mention: ffmpeg is installed, but the codec doesn't show up in the list.
only ffdshow video codec shows up. it records, but output video is just garbage.
totally leaning and distorted. and obs studio seems to be mac only as i have read.
i don't have a mac. and i doubt ever being able to afford a mac. for rich men only.

I meant "TechSmith Screen Capture Codec (TSCC)" or "Lagarith", and I tried both and had good results. And OBS Studio is not Mac only.

Do what hipoonios said. And use TSCC codec to compress your multiple avis. It works and filesizes are small.

I've never managed to get the built in recording tool in WinUAE to work.
Save yourself time and just download OBS Studio. It's free and just works.
I recorded Benefactor using OBS Studio and you can see the results here:

Far too many "it does not work" comments here without any useful information.

Have tried different codecs and both DirectDraw and Direct3D. All result in a output.avi file with 0 bytes.

I think there might be some kind of file I/O issue. Using that latest 3.6.0 (Public Beta 4, 2017.09.23) version I see big spikes in drive activity when WinUAE is recording that are not present when recording with Dxtory, even though both are using the same codec (MagicYUV in RGB mode) and are writing at the same bitrate. Here is a screenshot showing the drive activity while WinUAE is recording:

And when Dxtory is recording:

I used the resource monitor to verify that the write activity to that drive in each case was only from WinUAE or Dxtory, respectively. The operating system is Windows 10 Pro 64 bit.

There are many reasons for failing recording: codecs can have different size restrictions (usually must be 8 pixels divisible, sometimes 16), color depth restrictions (may require 32-bit), sound usually needs to be 2 channels only and more.

Check the log.

Different compression parameters? WinUAE can also queue multiple frames (up to 10 I think before it can cause emulation to pause) for background thread to compress. It can cause "different" CPU/disk usage.

In which case is there a recommend setup and codec that you know will work?
Would be nice to have better error checking rather than it appearing to be fine and then producing a 0k file.

i have witnessed file size reverting to 0k when changing to output tab while recording is active...
workaround for this problem is very simple: keep output tab selected when closing config window.
when you stop recording by clicking again on "avi output enabled", quickly rename output file.
rename it before you do anything else in winuae!

at this point i have a suggestion for future winuae versions:
"avi output enabled" should only show "enabled" if output really is enabled.
in disabled state i would prefer "disabled" or simply nothing as replacement.
but not "enabled", this one is a bit misleading...

Hi: As recording videos from my mobile is pure crap then I've tried today how to record a video directly from the PC or WinUAE. Using TSCC it was recording, but the music was 100% accelerated. I think it all was accelerated.

Using OBS Studio it records the screen but when WinUAE starts it keeps recording the PC desktop screen showing only a small black window on the desktop that I suposse is somehow WinUAE running. I was playing WinUAE full screen.

Could you please tell in detail how to configure it to record videos from WinUAE, or some other how to record videos with any other program, please?

@Retrofan
I hope the topic is not OT
I tried various programs to record videos including the internal winuae option
but the files were very large and not all worked well, especially with the audio activated and with the full screen.
I found hypercam version 4 Beta
This sample file is 150megabyte for a duration of 30 minutes in high (720p) resolution to be loaded directly on youtube without any conversion with other programs.
The program has other options.

here an example:

I hope it is useful

As recommended by White uses HyperCam, much better than the old Version 2.x, it's free, very light and easy to use. As a codec I recommend you use the Codec XiVID MPG4 codec (XiVid HD 1080), quality very small files supported by VirtualDub for changes.
